Vickers

Vickers manufactured and sold the Maxim machine gun, forming a partnership with Hiram Maxim, its inventor. They later took over the company and improved the design as the Vickers machine gun, which was the last major design Hiram Maxim himself worked on. It became the standard machine gun of the British Empire and Commonwealth, serving for some 50 years in the British Army. Vickers produced the machine gun in dozens of cartridge sizes and sold it all over the world. They also scaled it up to larger calibres, particularly for the Royal Navy as the 0.5 inch model.

  • Vickers brand aircraft were produced from 1911 to 1965, when BAC ended use of the name.
  • Their directional valves offer the ultimate in compactness and versatility of application for many directional control requirements f hydraulic machinery.
  • Edward Vickers was a miller; his wife was the daughter of a local steel maker George Naylor.
  • Further designs and difficulties followed although non-rigid machines including “Sea Scouts” (popularly called blimps) proved generally less troublesome than the larger rigid examples.
  • These 1906 pattern pistols were in 9 mm calibre and part of a contract for the Dutch military.

Laboratory & Industrial

In 1929, the acquired railway business was merged with that of Cammell Laird to form Metropolitan Cammell Carriage & Wagon. Vickers Hydraulic Valves are available with or without integral relief valve section and are suitable for pressures up to 3000 psi. Their directional valves offer the ultimate in compactness and versatility of application for many directional control requirements f hydraulic machinery. Ruggedness of design, controlled manufacturing quality and world-wide parts interchangeability are important parts of the overall story. Even on the most exacting industrial applications, you’ll find our directional controls keep your maintenance simple and downtime at a minimum.

Our Company

1917 Purchased a share in the British Westinghouse electrical company when the company’s American shareholders were bought out by Metropolitan Carriage, Wagon and Finance Co. 1915 Purchased the Consolidated Diesel Engine Manufacturers’ factory at Ipswich to build engines for submarines 18. 1854 Edward Vickers’ sons Thomas and Albert joined the Naylor, Vickers and Co business. Vickers brand aircraft were produced from 1911 to 1965, when BAC ended the name.

About Vickers Hydraulics and Products

The progression of the hardness values can then be plotted in a graph. Rolls-Royce plc purchased Vickers plc for £576 million in 1999 for its marine engineering businesses.4In 2002, Vickers Defence Systems was purchased by Alvis plc to form the subsidiary Alvis Vickers. In 2003, Rolls-Royce renamed its Vickers subsidiaries Vinters Engineering plc.5 The Vickers name lived on in Alvis Vickers. As a specialty chemical manufacturer, we manage large scale production alongside bespoke products and batch sizes.

  • The British version of the rifle was made by Vickers, and as result this version of the Pedersen rifle is usually called the Vickers Rifle.
  • In 2003, Rolls-Royce renamed its Vickers subsidiaries Vinters Engineering plc.5 The Vickers name lived on in Alvis Vickers.
  • The business began in Sheffield in 1828 as a steel foundry and became known for its church bells, going on to make shafts and propellers for ships, armour plate and then artillery.
  • The purpose of these hardness tests is to evaluate the strength of the weld, with particular focus on hardness around the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
  • Naylor was a partner in the foundry Naylor & Sanderson, and Vickers’ brother William owned a steel rolling operation.
  • In 1927, Vickers agreed to merge their armaments and shipbuilding and heavy engineering activities with the Tyneside-based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W.

Operate these valves remotely for unloading and sequencing, or directly for pressure relieving and reducing. Precise volumetric control is possible with temperature and pressure compensated flow control valves. The Jominy test (End Quench Test) is a standardized test procedure used to determine the hardenability of steel, and it can be performed using any Vickers micro hardness tester. To ensure accurate reading of the indents, the Vickers hardness testing standards prescribe a minimum diagonal width of 20 µm.

In 1927, Vickers agreed to merge their armaments and shipbuilding and heavy engineering activities with the Tyneside-based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. This merger was to take effect on 1 January 1928 and would give Vickers shareholders ownership of two-thirds of the new company. Perfect for applications such as drilling machinery, top head drives and marine winches, our low-speed high torque motors are engineered with robust components to deliver smooth, consistent power even in the toughest conditions. 1.6 Fifth change of the companyAfter the Second World War Vickers-Armstrongs manufactured commercial aircraft.

We’re dedicated to delivering the highest levels of service for our customers. Our experience shows in that we have successfully served the chemical industry for more than 50 years. Edward’s investments in the railway industry allowed him to gain control of the company, based at Millsands. Vickers entered naval shipbuilding with the purchase of Barrow Shipbuilding Company in 1897, forming Vickers the Naval Construction Yard at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. This yard later passed into the hands of the nationalised British Shipbuilders in 1977, was privatised as Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd in 1986 and remains in operation to this day as BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. The British tested John Pedersen’s design for a semi-automatic rifle between World War I and World War II.
