GBI isn't practical as a day trip but there are other island options for that including
Tiritiri Matangi
 This is an ever better trip if you do it overnight

Hi Jo
I will be there at June I never been to NZ and doesnt know much about it my friends told me I should go see the volcanos and take a hot spring Ive been doing some research and found the GBI has hot spring Is there somewhere else near Auckland that have hot spring

There are "commercial" hot springs at Waiwera and Parakai where the water is pumped into pools communal and private Rotorua has a lot of hot springs but getting there exploring and getting back to Auckland will take your three days there is a lot to see there also
