Mountain Weekly News ~ DENVER CO – What’s the best yoga studio in Denver This question had me scratching my head the more I pondered it And so it began the immersion into Denver’s yoga scene Over the course of a few months I had the privilege of delving into ten studios in and around Metro Denver Of all the spaces I visited I’m pleased to announce that not a single one was a disappointment Our picks for the Best Yoga in Denver: CorePower Yoga Denver Even the CorePower experience was a pleasant surprise I must admit I almost skipped it entirely due to their reputation for having a somewhat pretentious vibe where there are mirrors everywhere and the focus is more on sculpting the body than receiving the healing benefits of yoga And while some of the stereotype seemed to be justly earned I stumbled across some excellent teachers who were clearly versed in traditional Indian yoga versus the fitness yoga that I was expecting The fact that they are a hot yoga studio was also a nice bonus being able to spend a week of the cold winter sweating out toxins and such as though I was doing yoga in the Bahamas Root Yoga Studio in Denver Although the stint at CorePower was enjoyable it didn’t quite make the cut for my list of favorites I was however able to narrow it down to four Root Yoga was the first studio to really get my attention The moment you step through their door you are welcomed into a bright open space with enormous geodes in the corners of the room an exposed brick wall aged hardwood floor and a wall full of windows allowing light to pour in The actual teaching style at Root was something quite foreign as I would say I am accustomed to more traditional Hatha Yoga branches This idea that I was entering a new world of yoga made sense when I discovered that Root Yoga’s owner Ana Forrest created her own completely unique yoga style which seems to be growing quickly in popularity I found the classes to be challenging and playful at the same time One example of this was Root’s focus to help students improve their inversion poses (hand stands for example) which was integrated into the majority of the classes that I attended Vital Yoga Studio Denver Colorado Another studio that is pioneering their own style is Vital Yoga which is run by sisters Desi and Micah Springer While their space was equally bright and open the primary memory of my week there was the style they taught To me it seemed as though they were questioning alignment principles that have become commonplace in yoga It would be impossible for me to say whether or not their alignment modifications were vast improvements after merely attending classes there for a week But I will say that the instructors at Vital appeared to have no doubt that their methods were righteous and I highly respect the courage it takes to question the norm and go against the grain where they see fit Samadhi Yoga Studio of Denver As far as my own personal inklings for the ideal studio I was drawn to a couple in particular Samadhi Yoga being one of them Everything from the decor the music and smells to the variety of classes and workshops offered I was really given the impression that this studio was catering to my specific personality type Samadhi is the type of studio that has instructors chanting and playing an instrument for you during savasana (final resting pose) after giving individual adjustments and aromatherapy in order to encourage each student to completely unwind Karma Yoga Studio in Denver Karma Yoga gave me a very similar feeling But one aspect that separated Karma from all the rest was the fact that their space is actually an old house converted into a studio Needless to say it is extremely warm and inviting as though you are going to a friend’s house and happen to be joining them for a bit of yoga One thing that perhaps stuck with me the most from my time checking out Denver’s yoga spaces was the message about karma delivered by owner Katrina Gustafson reminding students to simply “do what’s right without expecting anything in return” I can see how it could be difficult to give such advice to students for fear that they may not come back Katrina has no such fear lacing words of wisdom throughout her classes with the brutal honesty of a child All in all my experience touring the various Denver yoga studios was incredible It not only reminded me how fortunate we are to have such acclaimed teachers here in Denver but it showed me how much yoga in general is expanding due to creative and courageous individuals ready to forge the way If you are new to Denver or new to the yoga scene I urge you to take your own tour and find the one that resonates most for you For those of you who have already done this what’s your favorite Samadhi Mountain Weekly News ~ BONDURANT WYO – According to Wyoming Game and Fish Regional Supervisor John Lund on the night of March 23rd a pack of wolves managed to take down 19 elk at the McNeel feed ground Of the 19 elk that were killed 17 were calves and 2 were adult cows So what’s so special about wild animals killing each other Well for starters only 3 of the dead elk had been fed on by the Wyoming wolves Which brings up a much larger question – what would lead the wolves to use their limited energy in the winter to take down such a large pack of animals If it wasn’t for hunger then for what If we take ourselves as humans and our ego’s out of the equation perhaps the wolves know something we do not Maybe these elk were sick Although when I spoke to John Lund for this piece he mentioned within the feeding grounds “they haven’t seen signs of disease” among the elk And this is where we enter into a grey area as there those in Wyoming that believe that the elk heards living at the feedgrounds each winter are being effected by Chronic Wasting Disease Yet the other side of the argument is that these elk are healthy and there is no Chronic Wasting Disease taking place at the feed grounds So which is it Aside from a zoo where else on earth do you see animals congrigating like this Photo Mark Gocke of the Jackson WY Feed ground I can tell you that last May I went out looking for elk antlers near one of the local feed grounds in Jackson WY The photos below are what I found: Wyoming Game and Fish is well aware of Chronic Wasting Disease in fact they have a plan to deal with this titled Chronic Wasting Disease Draft Plan A total of 70-75 elk have been killed across the state this winter by wolves again the question is why As it seem these are not kills for food and survival but for something very different something we as humans may never fully understand Gray wolves once roamed around the United States of America before decades of unregulated killing nearly wiped out the entire freaking species in the lower 48’s Since wolves were reintroduced to the Northern Rockies in the mid-90s the species has started to spread into a small part of its historic range Lets just hope this doesn’t start another wolf hunt by taking Wyoming wolves off the Endangered Species list As back in 2012 Yellowstone’s most famous wolf one that was collared and being researched known as 832F was shot and killed after she stepped foot outside of the National Park’s boundaries Do you support the hunting of wolves in Wyoming Or any state for that matter Would love to hear your comments below The post Wyoming Wolves Takes Down 19 Elk in a Night But Why appeared first on Mountain Weekly News by Mike Hardaker

Mountain Weekly News ~ Leash walking training is essential for breeds such as the German Shorthaired Pointer Learn some leash walking tips below : Attention Walking The goal here is to make the dog think you’re the center of the universe This may be challenging at first as your new pointer or any dog for that matter will be excited by all the sights and smells around them We recommend using soft delicious treats I choose white cheese for training Your dog may wonder about eating the cheese is at first but as with Char after one bite she was hooked and made for an amazing small soft reward for training We eventually switched to healthier organic dog treats just make sure they are soft and easy to digest Avoid the hard stuff like milk bones The Idea Start by having your dog sit in front of you ideally you have already mastered this part of the training if not start here before trying the attention walking With a loose leash and a treat in your hand slowly take a few steps backwards as the dog follows stop and if they sit or stop as well reward them with a treat Now the humane society recommends using the trigger word of “yes” to signal a job well done I had been saying good or good girl so with some training I to will have the correct commands down Just stay consistent after years good girl has stuck for us Timing At first this can be INCREDIBLY frustrating if the dog doesn’t want to sit or something else distracts their attention from behind while training and with a GSP it won’t take much of anything to get their attention as the can smell for freaking miles and miles and miles… After about 5-10 minutes of repetition I was able to see great results and for the most part Char would stay closer to me then she had the past few days We started our attention walking right out the front door and continued at a different location out on the ranch I think it’s important to mix the training locations up as these dogs are smart and need stimulation One thing that worked wonders was stopping and going stopping and going At first if you can make it to the end of your driveway congratulate yourself Then tomorrow the neighbors house and so on Don’t go trying this around the block unless you and your dog enjoy being frustrated Leash Walking Video Attention What I noticed most was I now had the dog’s attention while we go for walks This took some time but the more you invest now into these dogs the happier the next 10+ years of your lives will be (plural) as this is a family member don’t forget that You also want to get the dogs eyes to focus on you while walking on leash not a million miles ahead of you Char would pull I would stop she would turn around look at me and start walking back towards me At that point I would continue walking sure it may look silly and take a good deal of time to travel any distance but the dog and I are getting it And even better is if you can do this without your sunglasses let your dog learn and understand the different looks you give them as soon they will do the same to you And shorthairs eyes can burn holes through humans hearts minds and souls If these dogs have not been exercised enough you will learn to feel their heavy stares… Human Factor Training seems to be 50% about the dog and 50% about the human It’s extremely important to control your emotions and energy around German Shorthaired Pointers At times I will get frustrated when I’m being pulled and yanked in different directions or when the dog just simply chooses to ignore my “come” command Learning what to do when the dog does not react to the first command takes time It’s hard as instinct is to raise your voice just like my mom would do Get this part down now and you will odds are never have to use a leash in the future unless you are in a city As these dogs are not bread designed or really meant for any reason to be leashed Let them run but that can really only happen in confined areas at first until a trust is built The post German Shorthaired Pointer Training Leash Walking appeared first on Mountain Weekly News by Mike Hardaker
