Can someone check on Ella Actually if you haven’t seen last night’s Jane the Virgin Sunday’s Girls or last week’s Nashville you go check on Ella Spoilers are just aheadShows have been birthing and dealing with little babes since the dawn of the soap opera This week coincidentally three series dealt with them in the same gripping way: by unspooling plots about postpartum depression that saw the mother of each TV child physically abandon it So what does that mean for women Lets investigate First up: Nashville In an effort to acknowledge star Hayden Panettiere’s struggle with postpartum depression the show gave her character Juliette the same battle earlier this season Things came to a head over several episodes as Juliette ducked her daughter Cadence to lean into work and partying How realistic you find this portrait of postpartum depression probably depends on whether or not you’re Beyoncé-level famous Most moms struggling with hormones sadness and a suffocating sense of being overwhelmed don’t have access to jets parties and studio time But OK Juliette does Thats her path And on last Wednesday’s episode of Nashville she accepted a part in a movie that would take her away from Cadence for two weeks—only to have a change of heart during a press conference when she decided shed rather stay with her baby after all Theres a bit of oversimplification here for sure—but since Nashville has dug in on postpartum for the better part of a full season I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as long as this latest episode doesn’t “resolve” Juliette’s depression outrightPinterestFacebookABCMeanwhile over on Jane the Virgin Petra (Yael Grobglas) has been avoiding her baby twin girls—and her feelings—for weeks After a woman pulled her aside concerned at a new-mommy group Petra faced reality—and this week’s episode found her lying in bed and adjusting to medication for her depression But before we could congratulate her for taking care of her mental health she slipped out of bed dyed her hair brown and got on a bus Uh-oh Melodramatic Of course Jane is a telenovela after all And the show reminded us of that when at the end of the episode it revealed that when we thought we were watching brunette runaway Petra we were actually seeing the brunette runaway long-lost sister of Petra Still up until her secret twin rang the doorbell Petra’s flight instincts actually rang true—as did her prolonged reluctance to admit that she might need help The classic soap-opera evil twin device was actually kind of a disappointment—its almost like Jane had suddenly gotten too real for itself and backed out at Petras darkest momentBut more gutting than both Jane and Nashville’s postpartum twists put together was what happened on Sunday’s Girls Adam learned that his sister Caroline (Gaby Hoffmann) had left her husband and daughter after writing a note that indicated she had felt urges to hurt the baby and herself (The most gut-wrenching line in the letter directed to her husband: “Be as kind to our daughter as I have been cruel to you”) As things came into focus here I was ready to quibble with Girls’ decision to give Caroline postpartum depression mainly because Caroline is an erratic character who roams the streets in a nightgown and has vaguely sexual wrestling matches with her brother I worried that postpartum would be lumped into her crazy column rather than explored as something that can and does happen to all sorts of women But the tone of Caroline’s letter changed my mind—it was in fact the most direct and clearheaded the character has ever been which made her disappearance all the more heartbreakingPinterestFacebookWith the rise of mommy blogs and mental health awareness public discussion around postpartum depression is at its highest volume ever—but three moms dealing with mental health issues on three shows in a week Thats almost dizzying progress And it is progress even when the portrayals arent perfect After all though the baby device stretches way back in TV history as weve noted accurate portrayals of motherhood simply dont We joke about the Emma Greens and Ella Novak Beenes of the landscape But their much-celebrated appearances which were followed almost immediately by their disappearances speak to a truth that transcends television: In the writers room as in life babies are a hell of a lot to handle Its easier to walk awayBut since that isnt an option for flesh-and-blood moms its high time our small-screen counterparts had to face parenthood head-on too Producers—and its no surprise that all three of these series are run by women by the way—seem to be on board with that notion in 2016 Nashville clearly feels duty-bound to Panettiere and what shes been through You can almost sense that Jane the Virgin would have felt guilty staging a second birth on the show without acknowledging postpartum (Jane has her son Mateo and does not experience depression) And Girls is never one to shy away from the flip side of ideal I tip my hat to these three shows for tackling the issue (Note: Im wearing a hat because I have a toddler so I havent washed my hair since March) Theyre helping to wear away the stigma that weighs as heavily on suffering moms as the shadow of postpartum itself and babies,http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/topism/n-tops-34-topism.html,asics gt 1000 duomax. but its
