I realize that relatively speaking, that's not a fast mile. I realize that's about good enough to be an average member of a JV track team. Based on my reading here, I understand that many of you are ridiculously good runners, and do sub-8 minute miles in your sleep.
But to me, it feels pretty freaking amazing.
I grew up as a swimmer, partially because I've always been a pretty bad runner. In gym in middle and high school, we occasionally had to run a timed mile. My best was always around 8:45. I did 5ks and sprint triathlons throughout college without training for them much...mostly relying on the fact that I was young and in alright shape from swimming. Even so, my 5k times have usually been 32-35 minutes. Not fast.
When I decided to start running last August,
christian louboutin where to buy, I was able to go for about 14 minutes and barely finished a mile. It was at about that point that I realized that my days of using my youth to just coast by were going to be coming to an end.
So after 10 months of running,
loubotin, two 5ks, one 5 miler and one half marathon.....I decided maybe it would be interesting to see what my timed mile is. How have I not done a single timed mile in 10 months of training? Who knows. I normally just go out and run slowly until I can't run anymore.
I took a slow,
black high heels with red bottoms, 1 mile warm up jog down to the track at my alma mater's football stadium. It was rainy, with a pretty strong headwind, which I assume doesn't bode well for speed running but whatever. I could tell I was a little stiff from a 30 mile bike ride on Sunday, but nothing terrible.

So I lined up,

400m: 1:54
800m: 3:56
1200m: 5:58
1 mile.....7:56!
Not too shabby. And while I was definitely winded, I was not completely exhausted. Leading me to believe that if I actually put some time into training shorter distance running, I could probably shatter my best 5k time of 29:52.
But not now. Now is triathlon season. And I am 5 days away from my first Olympic distance triathlon! I got my long 30 mile bike ride in this weekend despite being sick, and managed to make it all the way out to Hokah,

So now it's time to taper and think ahead to the triathlon. Being a roughly 3 hour race, a lot of the success of the race is going to depend on strategy. This is what I have come up with thus far:

,
black and gold onitsuka tigers.9 mi/1.5 km Swim: Swimming is definitely always going to be my strongest leg, but a mile swim is never a walk in the park. That's a decent distance. Goal is to get out ahead of the pack immediately so that I'm not wasting energy fighting the group and going through choppy water. Once I have a lead...tone it down a bit and get in a steady pace. Try to avoid totally taxing the legs, and go for a good strong arm pull instead. Avoid aerobic depletion. Goal: 25 minutes or less.
25.5 mi/41 km Bike: Word is the bike course is hard and hilly. I'm used to training on the bluffs, which are long (2-4 mile) climbs. I have less experience on several short steep hills,

It's a 3 hour race and the bike seems to be the most logical place to eat and drink as much as possible. Goal: Close to 90 minutes.
6.2 mi/10 km Run: Despite my new found running talents, it's still always the hardest leg for me. Anticipate soreness getting off the bike. Start it slow to stretch out and get posture back. Get comfortable and try to maintain a steady pace. Hang in there and do not walk, even though it sounds amazing. Continue drinking when possible. Goal: Under 70 minutes.
Other things: No more than 5 minutes in transitions. Don't fall down. Don't get hurt. Don't get dehydrated.  ,
