Ore. works hard to fit into an already full life Her job as a compliance officer at Mercy Corps an international nonprofit that helps people around the world after conflict crisis and natural disaster takes her to the far-reaches of the globe In addition to work-related travel that landed her in Iraq Ethiopia and Turkey so far this year she will add trips to Japan and South Africa to compete in ultrasCurrently training for the Western States 100 Sproston was just hours off a plane from Istanbul when she took time to chat about her work adventures and the curiosities of drug testingRUNNING TIMES: Your career requires you to travel to somewhat challenging locations How do you continue to train while you're awayAMY SPROSTON: Even when I'm traveling I have a typical 8 am to 5 pm schedule so depending where I'm at I try to squeeze running in before or after work which is what I do when I'm home too For example for this past trip to Istanbul I was fortunate to meet some ultrarunners in Turkey who took me out We went for a run in a local forest and there also happened to be a race so I jumped into a 50-miler But when I'm in Iraq or other places it's a little more challenging to get out In Iraq we happened to be in a safer part of the country so I could go out running but not necessarily on trails for a variety of reasons But then in Ethiopia -- where a lot of elites live and train near Addis -- you can go run long on the weekendsRT: How were you able to connect with the runners in TurkeyAS: I was there last year for a week and I had read an article about running in Turkey I contacted the author of that piece and he put me in contact with a group of about five guys They took me out running and we've stayed in touch on Facebook and email They had read my blog and realized that I'd be there at the same time as this Iznik Ultra 75K and made arrangements for me to run it RT: How did it goAS: It was fun I had raced the weekend prior at the Lake Sonoma 50 [placing third] so I wasn't sure how another race would go after doing that and then the long travel But I was first overall by a little more than an hour I actually had a good race and felt great all day It was a run through a lot of little villages with a lot of fire road and gravel road It was interesting but it was very different from what we're used to here with races mostly on the trails It was nice and very well-organizedRT: So it sounds like Istanbul treats your training well What about when you go to IraqAS: We're up in a place called Sulaymaniyah in northern Kurdish Iraq If I were in Baghdad I wouldn't have been able to leave the compound but up in the north it's a little safer They did allow me to run but they also have this policy that you can't go out after dark alone When I went out in the morning it was basically still dark but I guess dark in the morning seems different than dark at night I ran on the streets of the city and on the weekends I'd get one of the drivers to drop me off up in the mountains near the town and let me run home from there It's not a comfortable feeling running there They haven't seen a lot of women out running so I get a lot of stares from men and women You can just tell it's not a commonly seen activity If I didn't make it out of the compound I could also just run around the apartment complex which is about a quarter mile of road It got kind of boring pretty quicklyRT: Given the demands of your job how are you able to achieve such a high level in ultrarunning competitionAS: It was funny in Turkey when the second-place guy came in He made a comment explaining why he was behind me -- something like 'I have a full-time job and I work' I just said 'Well I have a job too so   ' When I'm home I train with some women in the morning around 5:30 and we also have a Tuesday night trail-running group I typically only run once a day and I fit it in either in the morning lunchtime or evening Then I run long on the weekends It's just a matter of always making time for it I like to get it done in the morning because you never know what the day will bring I'm not a super high-volume runner My peak is about 90 miles which when you're working a full-time job and running 90 miles on the side there's not a whole lot of time for anything elseIf I had the opportunity I'm not sure that I'd actually want to just run I think that would make it less fun in terms of it being a lot of pressure If that's how you're making your living you're obviously not going to be able to do it forever I have a job that I really like I get to travel and see really interesting places It's an organization I believe in and feel like we do good work I like the balance of having a good job that I'm passionate about and having running on the sideRT:  After winning the individual and team gold at the 2012 world championship 100K you were put in the international drug testing pool You write on your blog quite honestly and openly about what that means and your experiences with drug testing Many athletes don't really discuss it in much detail Why did you decide to talk about itAS: People think that there's no drug testing in ultras and on many levels there isn't But there are some people being tested I actually got tested a second time after Sonoma I got back from Sonoma that Monday and left for Istanbul on Wednesday so they showed up on Tuesday before work I was surprised they came back so quickly [Sproston was also tested at the end of March] I think we'll see more of it as ultras get bigger I decided to write about it because of the predominance in thinking that there is no drug testing in our sport I have to let these people know where I am from 6 am to 11 pm every day so it definitely affects my life It's not completely accurate for people to say that nobody is being testedRT: Within that entry you describe your victory at the world championship as a "freak incident" WhyAS: I guess when I think of people who would win world championship events I don't think of myself as somebody that would happen to I'm a good runner but I wouldn't say that I'm on par with the past several winners of world championships It was one of those days when everything came together I'm also not the most confident runnerLast year when I came back from Istanbul I had deep vein thrombosis -- a blood clot in my calf which evolved into a pulmonary embolism I wasn't even sure that I'd be able to run up until a few weeks before the 100K world championships Going into the race I wasn't even sure I should be running It was a sort of magical experience It's very cool to say that you've won a world championship but I still don't consider myself on the same level as other people who compete in that eventRT: Can you talk a bit about your training Do you have a coachAS: I have kind of always coached myself although I just recently started using a schedule I've been trying to follow it but I'm also not a huge fan of following a schedule It's more that I like to run by feel So if I feel like going out for a hard workout I'll do it But if I don't feel like it I don't like doing it just because my schedule says I'm supposed to I'm trying but in general I coach myself and I don't usually have a training plan I have a weekly mileage that I'm trying to hitRT:You have an ambitious race schedule that includes Western States 100 a 100K in Tokyo Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc then the 100K world championships again How is your training going What are you expectingAS: That Tokyo race is supposed to be about 2000 runners so that's a pretty good-sized ultra Japan has such a strong road and ultrarunning scene so it'll be interesting to see that Then it's Western States White River 50 Mile UTMB then to South Africa in late October/early November for worlds I have a lot of travel coming up Training is going well I feel fit and I'm not dealing with injuriesI like doing this mix of roads and trails Going from flat roads in Japan to the trails at Western then back to roads for worlds will be interesting to see how I do with the mix of all these races It's not like I'm going from all road to all trail; they are sort of mixed together We'll see how that goes  Tags: RT July 2013 right? my anniversary and goal race is Sunday. the starting line had moved several times and the end of the race was relocated to Ring Road, trained more for this race (something like 32 mpw))January 2014 - 1:43:34 (first half, breitling 44 superocean, Williams earned a bachelors degree from East Stroudsburg University," he said.
