   I did go see a doctor,nick air, "I went to a specialist and their diagnosis was nothing could be done and [my] running days [were] over.So Ive done a lot of running since then" When Whitlock takes time off from running he doesnt cross train or try to fill the void with any other form of physical activity He just spend more time on his computer watching TV and doing housework He says that when he cant train he doesnt miss it terribly
"If somehow or other I could race well without doing any training that would be ideal I find this training a bit of a drudge really" Whitlock said "I dont suffer from runners highs in training and that kind of thing Its all a bit of a chore really but I have to [put in a lot of time running] if I want to run well"
Whitlock said that ideally he would run three hours a day at an easy pace most days Thats what he did leading up to his best-ever performancea 2:54:48 marathon at age 73
"Its been a couple of years since I last got up to three hours and even then I didnt manage to do it for any length of time the way Id done it before" Whitlock said "In order to make me run well thats what I need to do I dont seem to need to work on my speed for good performance all I need to do is work on my endurance"
More recently in a good week hell run 90 to 120 minutes per day depending on how his body is feeling Hes also introduced a new component into his trainingthe occasional shorter faster run He does this not for the traditional reasons runners tend to do speedwork but because he learned after seeing how his injuries would seemingly vanish during and after races that some faster running helps his knees feel better
And as he has for many years Whitlock does virtually all of his running around a roughly one-third mile paved path at Milton Evergreen Cemetery near his home He doesnt time or count his laps he only tracks of his overall running time
Ed Whitlocks training the week leading up to his 85 half marathon world record:
Monday: 1 hour Tuesday: 15 hours Wednesday: 125 hours Thursday: 15 hours Friday: off (knee pain)  Saturday: 15 minutes Sunday: race
Whitlock says he runs the cemetery loop for many reasons (its safe has a predictable surface there's shade less wind no hills and so on) but one of the most appealing things about running there is that it gives him the opportunity to do his own thing
"Out on the roads I feel it necessary to look like a runner whereas if Im in the cemetery I dont need to look like a runner" Whitlock said
Whitlock prefers running solo most of the time because that gives him full control over his pace and the flexibility to run when and however long he wants to
He doesnt wear a GPS watch and scoffs at the idea of listening to music to help pass the time
"Runners are not supposed to listen to music" he said "It might [make it more fun] but Ive never gotten into the headphone business"
This summer Whitlock hopes to go after more age-group world records on the track at distances from 1500 meters to 10000 meters and he may go after some road records as well but he hasnt selected specific races yet
He had considered running a marathon at the end of May but said that after his half marathon performance on Sunday he has ruled out that idea
"A marathon is just not going to be pretty" Whitlock said adding that he thinks hed need to get back to doing three-hour runs again in order to run a successful marathon
Whitlock says his outlook on running hasnt changed much since he was younger though he gets less nervous for his races now than he did when he was young
"In some respects the running doesnt seem that much different from what it used to" Whitlock said "When I look at the clock its a lot different but it doesnt feel that much different"
Whitlock still dreams of achieving the equivalent type of fitness that went into his sub-2:55 marathon at age 73 one of the greatest age-group performances of all time
"Id like to be able to repeat that performance sometime not in absolute terms but in relative terms" Whitlock said adding that he knew he was in great shape going into that race "That was at the time when Id run the most 3-hour training sessions over a consistent period of time Ive never quite got to that degree of consistency in training since then Hopefully Ill be able to do that again but who knows" Tags: Newswire That’s okay.
