The Austrian stamps issues from 1st
June, 1850 to 30th April, 1867 were also placed in circulation in
Hungary, then an Austrian province. These stampa when used for franking on the
territory of that time Hungary, belond first of all to Hungarian stamp
collections, though the Austrian collectors of these issues include - for
reasons easy to guess at – also those with Hungarian cancellationin their
collection,

the character of Hungary ended with the compromise witr Austria
in 1867, hereby the way opened before theindependent activity of the Hungary
Post. The new stamps of Hungary which identical with those of Austria, were
made by the Stae Ppinting of Austria and put into circulastion by the Postal
Adminstration of Hungary on 1st June, 1867. They could be used be
for postage till 31st July, 1871.
the first home produced stamps, the
so called “lithographed” and “engraved” sets were issused by the Hungarian Post
on 1st May, 1871.
Local issues
After the Padua agreement of 3rd
November, 1918 closing the First World War and the Belgrade armistice areement
of 13th November, 1918, the occupation of certain Hungarian
territories began. During this period an omportant quantity of the Hungarian
stamps issued earlier were overprinted in order to indicate partly the tariff
increase, increase, partly the national status.
A part of Western Hungary was
annexed to Austria by the Peace Teaty of Trianon. On the evacuted area the
Hungarian irregular troops established a new republic called “Lajtbánság” and
issued stamps.
The provisional stamps issued in
Nyíregyháza and the stamps overprinted in Abony have a connection with the war
events of the Second World War.
During the revolution in 1956 a part
of the stamps stock of the Post Office Sopron No. 1. was overprinted.
watermarks
The Hungarian postage
stamps were printed on a paper without watermark till 1881. Between the years
1881 and 1961 they were printed on a paper with watemark. The watemarks are
assigned the serial numbers I – XIII.Beginning with 1962 the Hungarian stamps
have been printed on paper without watemark.
Perforation
First
the Hungarian stamps were produced with harrow-perforation but as eaely
as from 1874 on line-perforation was used and only souvenir sheets were
perforated by harrow afterwards. Beginning with 1906 practically only
comb-perforation has been applied.
