Cefotaxime (brand names include: Claforan / Biotax / Cefotax / Oritaxim / Omnatax / Lyforan / Sefotak / Taxime) is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
Cefotaxime is indicated for the treatment of patients with serious infections.
Indications include:
Lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia
Genitourinary infections including uncomplicated gonorrhea
Gynecologic infections, including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis and pelvic cellulitis
Bacteremia/Septicemia
Skin and skin structure infections
Intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis
Bone and joint infections
Central nervous system infections including meningitis and ventriculitis
Cefotaxime (cefotaxime for injection) Sodium is supplied as a dry powder form equivalent to either 1 g or 2 g of cefotaxime. The diluent chamber contains Dextrose Injection. The concentration of Hydrous Dextrose in Water for Injection USP has been adjusted to render the reconstituted drug product iso-osmotic. Dextrose Injection is sterile, nonpyrogenic, and contains no bacteriostatic or antimicrobial agents. After removing the peelable foil strip, activating the seals, and thoroughly mixing, the reconstituted drug product is intended for single intravenous use. When reconstituted, the approximate osmolality for the reconstituted solution for Cefotaxime (cefotaxime for injection) for Injection USP and Dextrose Injection is 290 mOsmol/kg. What is it used for? Cefotaxime, like other β-lactam antibiotics does not only block the division of bacteria, including cyanobacteria, but also the division of cyanelles, the photosynthetic organelles of the Glaucophytes, and the division of chloroplasts of bryophytes. In contrast, it has no effect on the plastids of the highly developed vascular plants. This supports the endosymbiotic theory and indicates an evolution of plastid division in land plants. In the past, women using hormonal contraception such as the pill or patch would be advised to use an extra method of contraception (eg condoms) while having treatment with an antibiotic like this one and for seven days after finishing the course.
