A form teacher can easily get into trouble when unexpected work is given to a class. It is especially problematic when it is to be done when there is no school. And yet, you can find students who are ready to help. Not too many, but you are never left alone. And that’s what happened today.
Three of them turned up to carry desks and tables after a party. And we were ready in a little bit more than half an hour.

6.50 on a cold, early winter day. Just got into the water of the local swimming pool trying to add 10 more laps to personal record.

8.00. Just hit the wall after 70 laps. Not too tired, so turned towards the last 20.

8.20. 91 laps completed. The reason for the extra 1 lap? To reach 3,000 meters. I am really proud of myself.

After nearly two weeks without swimming, today I went to the pool – and once being there, I added ten more laps to my personal record.

As the picture suggests 80 laps were done in 80 minutes. The overall length is 80×33 = 2,640 m (1.64 miles)

Harry Potter can sell anything. Twenty-first century tale, that is what I had to build on my lesson. The idea was to use HP (which is by accident the abbreviation of home-made brandy) to teach new vocabulary. Working with the help of my students, I managed to put a good lesson together. I enjoyed it myself, too.

Tomorrow is the open day at school. This is the time when students-wanna-be come and check the institute and take part in lessons.

I am usually one of the lucky teachers to lead a lesson, and so far I have had no problem with finding out something .. until today. I hope it will change by the evening today.

I have used all the opportunities but in vain. Had some success with about half of them but many would refuse any method. I am about to give up. One aim remains: lead them to GCSE.

Generation Y and computers

Nearly all students of mine use computer technology day by day. Yet, it seems to me that they do not utilize the opportunities it provides. Let me explain why.

In my teaching practice I use ICT as much as possible. Whenever there is a writing task, students are allowed to hand in their tasks in paper form or in word format. Most of them choose the latter one. And here comes the problem.

They do not know how to handle MS Word. They write in English but tend to forget to set the language (not big deal, is it?). They do not care that the program underlines everything in red. They cannot set the right format either, no paragraphs are made, they do not use the proper spacing, etc.

My questions is: when will they learn to use the computer properly?

Water polo in Miskolc

On Tuesday this week I could personally support for Hungary to beat the Greek water polo team courtesy of the head of Delfin Water Polo Club of Kazincbarcika.

The match was really enjoyable, saw some really good staff and goals, and of course my camera was also with me.

After a lukewarm first quarter (1:1), Hungary changed gear and defeated the Greek with three goals. (8:5). Going home, I felt really good and satisfied. I wouldn’t have missed the chance.
