Applying Sensor Networks in Home Technologies

Introduction

Smart home applications where various home devices will be automatically and/or remotely operated and controlled have attracted much attention of the researchers. In these home applications, automatic sensing of different devices, objects and home members is of primary importance. It is the presense of certain objects or persons that manipulate/operate/control the operation of the home applications. Besides, in many home applications, sensing different environmental parameters such as room temperature, room humidity, room light level, room noise level is important. In such applications, depending on the measured parameters, the applications perform their jobs. Advances in sensor node hardware have made the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) a new and promising sensing paradigm that may greatly facilitate human life by providing ubiquitous sensing, computing, and communication capability. The principle purpose of Sensor Networks in home applications is to identify the location/identity of different home appliances and home members, measure environmental parameters, collect information about different devices, monitor certain objects/persons, transfer sensed data to the servers (if any), transfer server commands to different devices, and also operate devices according to server commands or user presence/commands/location/identity/preferences. Two important issues of using sensor networks in home applications are:

  1. What is being sensed?
  2. Where the sensor is located?
