- Sensors might detect the location/position of the target object
- Sensors might monitor the status of the target object i.e. how much milk is in the refrigerator
- Sensor might measure various environmental parameters such as temperature, light, humidity, noise
- Some sensors might work as backbone sensors. They will only route sensed data (of other sensors) to some upper level sensors or to the servers/gateways
- Some sensors might serve both of the purposes mentioned above
- Sensors might transfer sensed data from the participant to the servers (if any)
- Sensors might transfer server commands to the devices
- Sensors (attached to the devices) might operate devices according to server commands
- Sensors (attached to the devices) might operate devices according to user presence/commands/location/identity/preferences
