This is a powerfull win32 only clone of Scintilla ( http://www.scintilla.org), also comes under GPL.
Development continued on Geany since 2012. It's even better, than vii! :)

Recommended free OS's:
AntiX. Debian based, runs on 48 MB RAM, 40k+ free apps. My main system. Forum.
Ubuntu. The most popular linux distro, if derivatives (Linux Mint, kubuntu..) are added.
The windows8 Modern(Metro) UI is similar to Ubuntu's Unity. Good news: if you don't like it, it's easy to replace it with LXDE, XFCE, or MATE. Steam users reported higher framerates on these desktops, compared to Unity or KDE.
