The road leading to the election of the new ANC president is caught between catastrophists and optimists. Catastrophists are those aligned to the Guptas, and optimists are those who seek to rescue the country from the Guptas. So far Cyril Ramaphosa is leading the pack of optimists. But Ramaphosa is only leading just because he is currently holding the title of ANC deputy president, beyond that Ramaphosa has nothing to offer and so he is easily beatable.
Mathews Phosa, the ideas man, is one of the latest entrants in the dark and murky waters leading to the ANC Presidency in December. The former Mpumalanga Premier under the government of Nelson Mandela has finally succumbed to pressures from his conscience and also from his many supporters to enter the ring and fight, rather than adopt the usual approach of just criticizing by the side lines.
The task awaiting Mathews Phosa and his supporters may seem daunting but it is not impossible, the main challenge however is how he can keep his head above the dark chaotic waters; considering the intrigues, back stabbing, thuggery and occult practices taking place in the current ANC.
My initial thoughts is that Matthews Phosa while he has been a premier of Mpumalanga his heritage, family history and roots is strictly from the voter rich Limpopo Province. He should use that personal heritage in the same way that President Jacob Zuma has done with his 100% Zulu Boy T-shirts appealing to the KwaZulu-Natal region. He should move up and down the ANC branches in the vast traditional rural areas of Limpopo reigniting his historical heritage. He speaks the language very well and will be well received.
Further advice for him is that there is also a need for bridge building with other like-minded ANC luminaries. The first is getting an endorsement from Kgalema Motlanthe. Drafting Kgalema Motlanthe into his presidential ambitions will unlock Gauteng to him.
Another key figure ?worth considering is Thandi Modise.?Mathews Phosa served with Thandi Modise in the top 6 ANC leadership echelons, and there was solid spirit of friendship and comradeship felt in the air between the two. Thandi Modise is the current Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces and the past premier of the North West. She is from Huhudi in Vryburg, the place of Ruth Mompati, one of the largest districts of the North West. Modise is also the former MK soldier and was shot one time by Apartheid police. At most of the times she was the only woman in the ANC military camps. She is the first woman in South Africa to be jailed for MK activities. Apartheid government jailed her while she was heavily pregnant in 1979. She spent 8 years in prison. Thandi Modise knows North West Province very well and has fought hard battles with Supra Mahumapelo, the current ANC chairperson.
North West remains a fractious province; there are many ANC branches up in arms with Supra Mahumapelo. Two decisive things have shook the ANC in the North West Province: the killings of miners in Marikana and the killing of the prominent businessman Wandile Bozwana.?Bozwana was one of Mahumapelo’s most vocal critics.
How about Mathews Phosa galvanizing Forum for Service Delivery? The Forum for Service Delivery nearly won the Rustenburg municipality in the previous local government elections. Forum for Service Delivery is a political party largely formed by ANC supporters. If Phosa can win them over and bring them back to the ANC, they would work freely for him and help in mobilising the province against Supra Muhamapelo who is being regarded as the pillar of the Gupta sordid enterprise going by the name of the premier league.
Further Mathews Phosa should be able to tap into the minds of young disfranchised ANC cadres. Many ANC young minds remain shocked about the current leadership of the ANC Youth League. In this regard the point of reference should be Ronald Lamola, a young energetic athletic man who served as Julius Malema’s deputy in the previous ANC Youth League. Many wanted Ronald Lamola to take over the reigns of ANC Youth League after Julius Malema has left for greener pastures (the formation of the EFF). But in the midst of strong allegations of corrupt money, premier league shenanigans Lamola lost to an unknown entity going by the name of Collin Maine.
And so after Mathews Phosa has appealed three provinces; Limpopo, Gauteng and made overtures in the North West he can now reach out to the fourth province, Mpumalanga. This one should be easy. His achievements as the founding premier of the province are there to see. He should, in this instances, show how the province is now lying in ruins since he left.
David Mabuza does not have outright control of ANC branches across Mpumalanga. Besides the ANC branches within the province remains nostalgic about the glorious past history when Matthews Phosa was the chairperson. Through his charm and elegant stature Phosa brought Mpumalanga to the national radar.
The theme of Phosa’s election campaigns should be about making the ANC great again.
History will not judge Mathews Phosa if he loses the race because of corrupt people. In fact history will record him as one of the ANC solid gold who fought very hard to rescue the ANC from a miasma of doom and total collapse. Simply stated, Mathews Phosa has nothing to lose in entering this race, but all to gain, his stature and monument will become even bigger.
