The world-renowned Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017 exhibition is currently on show at the Chavonnes Battery Museum in Cape Town.

What to expect 
Immerse yourself for an hour or two this winter in the colourful images underwater then step below sea-level, meander over and between the ribs of the 18th Century Archaeology ruins and discover the story of the “Cape of Storms”.
Showcasing 50 intriguing images in 10 categories with underwater behaviour and two new categories for Portrait and Compact, the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017 secured 100 finalists from 20 countries including South Africa, Mexico, Finland, Indonesia, Egypt, Sudan, Norway, Canada, France, Italy and the UK.
Images like the “Dancing Octopus”, shot in the lagoon of the island of Mayotte between Mozambique and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean are on show. 
The image secured Gabriel Barathieu from France the Underwater Photographer of the Year title for 2017.
Shot further south along the South Africa coast at Port St John’s is where the image “Dolphins Hunting” was captured during the annual Sardine Run. The image was Highly Commended in the behaviour category, and taken by Greg Lecoeur from France while on holiday in SA last year.

2017 Underwater Photographer of the Year winners
Runner Up in the behaviour category was awarded to the South Africa diver Jean Tresfon for his spectacular image “Humpback whale feeding on Krill” taken a few miles off the Hout Bay coast in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Underwater Photographer of the Year is a London-based annual competition that seeks to celebrate photography beneath the surface of the sea, lakes, rivers and even swimming pools. 
This year the competition saw 4500 entries taken in 67 countries.

Dr Heidi van Deventer completed her MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree in 2004 at the University of Stellenbosch.
She has additional training in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) as well as biostatistics and epidemiology.
Dr Van Deventer is currently working as a researcher at the Desmond Tutu Tuberculosis Centre at the University of Stellenbosch.
