A key ally of Jeremy Corbyn has backed plans to strengthen the hard left’s grip on the Labour leadership as he criticised the party’s MPs for having an overblown sense of their own importance.

Mr Gardiner told the BBC’s Westminster Hour programme: “Quite honestly - 15, 10, 5, 2 - I don’t care.


"It’s the members ultimately that need to decide this and I think the great thing about what we have been through since the election and let’s remember Jeremy is now absolutely ensconced as our leader having won a larger share of the public vote in the general election than when we won the election in 2005.


“It’s not an issue of need. This is about the membership realising that they are the ones who decide the future of the party.


“All too often members of parliament seem to think that actually ‘this party is our party, we are the important people in it’.


"No. It is the members and it is them on behalf of the public and that is why they should have a bigger say.”




Another ally of Mr Corbyn, Chris Williamson, the shadow fire minister, backed the rule change in August and went even further as he said the threshold should be abolished entirely.


He suggested that people who are resistant to the idea are “frightened of democracy”.

The row over the mechanics of the party’s leadership elections has been rumbling on for months with Mr Corbyn’s team wanting to reduce the proportion of MPs whose support is required to stand for the leadership.


The proposed change is expected to be voted on at the party's conference in Brighton and Mr Corbyn's allies hope his election success will help it through.


If agreed it would clear a path for leadership candidates from Labour's more radical fringe in Parliament, virtually guaranteeing that they could always muster enough support to be included in the national ballot of members.


The proposed rule change has been dubbed the "McDonnell amendment" in honour of John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor, who failed to reach the 15 per cent threshold in 2007 and 2010.
