Orange’s interest in cross-border expansion is understandable. Such an alliance of former state telecoms monopolies already exists, of course, between Deutsche Telekom and BT, with the Germans the senior partner. Their 12pc stake in BT, a result of its takeover of mobile operator EE, is already signalling changes. Investors say Deutsche Telekom has been privately talking up its influence over the British and rivals detect a change in attitudes.
