Most blue moons look pale gray and white, but on rare occasions they can look blue.
According to NASA a truly-blue moon usually requires a volcanic eruption.
In 1883 people saw blue moons almost every night after the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded. The plumes of ash rose into the atmosphere and filtered the moonlight, giving it a pale, ghostly complexion that appears blue to our eyes.
