This places the school higher up the academic ranking than the likes of Wellington College (38 per cent), Roedean (38 per cent) and the Duchess of Cambridge’s alma mater Marlborough College (30 per cent).
The results are the first produced by the school since it was founded over two years ago in Newham, the second most deprived borough in England, where the average free school meal rate stands at around 40 per cent, considerably higher than the national average of around 14 per cent.
In her first major announcement since being reappointed as Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan said she would step up plans to turn hundreds of struggling primaries and comprehensives into semi-independent academies, and open 500 more “free schools”, despite fierce opposition.
Reacting to the publication of the A-level results at the East London school, Ms Morgan said: “With teachers and parents in the driving seats, free schools are leading the way in inspiring children from disadvantaged areas to breakdown barriers and achieve their full potential.
“The London Academy of Excellence and other excellent free schools – like the West London Free School Primary, rated outstanding in all areas this month by Ofsted – show that a rigorous academic education needn’t and shouldn’t be the preserve of the rich or lucky."

Jonathan Leigh, headmaster at Marlborough College, said: "The contention that 30 per cent of pupils at Marlborough achieved AAB at A level in 2014, including at least two of the Russell Group ‘facilitating subjects’, does not reflect the entire examination picture taken at the College. The figure does not recognise the achievements of our pupils in the academically rigorous Cambridge Pre-U qualification,Kicksokok.com, studied in many independent schools, whose top two available grades are judged to be worth more UCAS points than A* at A level.
"With the Pre-U grades included, 44 per cent of our pupils surpassed this particular benchmark. The figure quoted [above] represents only a small part of a much broader educational opportunity which also includes the IB. Should you add this in as well then the figure would be approximately 47 per cent."
