"If the current unsustainable slaughter continues it will indeed result in the virtual extinction of the African over most of its range within 20 years or so, leaving only a few token pockets to remind us of what we have lost.


"The elephant’s future is entirely dependant on persuading The Chinese (and to a lesser extend other Far Eastern countries such as Thailand and Vietnam) to end this illegal trade in what only rich people buy and nobody needs. There are encouraging signs that the message is finally getting through, but it is going to be touch and go for Africa’s steadily dwindling herds."


However, Mike Pflanz, The Telegraph's correspondent in Nairobi, who is currently attending the summit in Botswana, suggested claims that elephants are on the brink of extinction were wrong.


"In huge parts of southern Africa, elephant populations are very healthy," he said. "The same goes with the rangelands in Kenya, and parts of Tanzania - yes those populations will be hammered, but most people here believe the worst case scenario would still see half the elephants remaining - not that they'll disappear. And that's if poaching sticks to current trends."

Kenyan wildlife expert Jonathan Scott added: “The bottom line is this: if we abandon tourism, we abandon conservation. When people ask me, 'How can we help?’ we say: 'By taking a safari.’ Wildlife-based tourism is not a choice but a necessity. It pays the bills that keep the game parks and their wildlife secure. Without the tourist dollars you might as well hand over all the remaining wildlife to the poachers.”


Elephants aren't the only species under threat, Jackman explained.


"Twenty-five years ago 200,000 lions roamed across the continent. Today that figure has shrunk to perhaps 20,000, of which only 3,cheap jordans for sale,500 are adult males – and numbers are still falling," he said.
