1. Gijón and Asturian cider
Asturias’s cool capital Oviedo might feel like the most obvious place to knock back local cider, but it’s fun-loving seaside Gijón that hosts the real summer cider revelry. Come late August, the Fiesta de la Sidra Natural sees cider-pouring competitions, local brewery tours,
cheap jordans online, and free tastings across town. Topping it all is a yearly attempt to beat the world record number of simultaneous cider pourers. The festival dates are yet to be confirmed for 2017. To ensure a quiet spot for retreat, stay at the four-star Parador de Gijón, built from an old mill in Isabel la Católica Park. If you’d prefer to be in the thick of it, Cimadevilla’s Hotel Asturias is the ticket. Parador de Gijón doubles from ?63 (0034 902 54 79 79;

2. Food of the Basque Country
It seems the creative gods of New Basque cuisine can do no wrong, being continually showered with Michelin stars. Pintxo-packed San Sebastián alone takes in two of the world’s top 10 restaurants – Arzak and Mugaritz. But Basque gastronomy isn’t all high-end eateries and elaborate bite-sized pintxos (tasty though they are). An excellent way to feast on as many varied dishes as possible across the region is with the Spanish culinary expert A Taste of Spain’s “Basque Country for Foodies” holiday. Run on a flexible, private, small-group basis, the four-night trip takes in wineries, cooking classes, market ambles, and a traditional seafood lunch on the Basque coast, as well as local-expert-led pintxo tours and tastings in San Sebastián and Bilbao.

3. Cómpeta’s Night of the Wine, Andalusia
The whitewashed Andalusian mountain village of Cómpeta, an hours’ drive from
Málaga,
cheap wholesale jordans, throws a fantastic summer wine party, which is soaring in popularity. Held without fail on August 15, the Noche del Vino is a magical celebration of local tradition honouring the region’s fine muscatel wines. Daytime festivities kick off with the treading of the first grapes, mass-made migas (fried breadcrumbs) and local dancers. After dark, there’s live flamenco guitar, song and dance, and free Cómpeta wine into the early hours. Hotel Balcón de Cómpeta makes a great town base, but it’s worth venturing further afield. Pocketed away in the hills, Finca El Cerrillo is a stunningly restored 200-year-old farmhouse, with Moorish-inspired rooms and pool.

The Empordà may not be as renowned as La Rioja but the gorgeously fertile countryside just inland from the Mediterranean produces some of the best wines in Catalonia. They’ve been cultivating grapes here since Roman times and vineyards carpet the landscape for miles. Castillo Perelada is one of the major estates in the region and also includes the five-star Hotel Peralada. The hotel has its own spa which uses wine-based products and can also organise tastings and visits to its vineyards and cellars as well as the wine museum in the nearby medieval castle.
