Hello {{item.title}} Cape Town - Miners in north-western Zimbabwe took the decision to save a beautiful old baobab tree even if it did mean they'd have to forego more than 6 000 tonnes of coal. This stunning picture of the ancient baobab standing lone and proud on the edge of the dusty pit in Hwange was taken by Kelsey Wood last month. Wood, who works for Makomo Resources which runs the mine, said, "It seems crazy to think coal miners would take the time and effort to carefully plan their mining around a tree." ( ) Happily, the miners did, leaving enough space around the roots of the tree to hopefully allow it to flourish. The firm is hoping to "backfill" the area mined more quickly than usual so to give the tree even more of a chance to survive. Wood first saw the tree on a visit to the mine on a visit two years ago. The firm believes that the baobab is at least 100 years old, though it may be even older. She said: "I was in awe at how strangely gracious it looked standing on a pillar above the black coal pit. I had always wondered if it would make it." Keeping the tree standing meant ignoring the coal that could be mined beneath it. That amounted to -- according to Wood -- 6 150T of coal worth more than 200 000 US (about R at R) She says that in line with ongoing reforestation and rehabilitation programmes run by the firm, indigenous grasses will be planted around the baobab once the mine is backfilled. "It would have been heartless to destroy it," she said.
