Style & character: 7/10

Dating from 1550, this handsome thatched flint-stone farmhouse is crammed with historic features including a huge, oak-beamed, inglenook fireplace, stone-flagged floor and original wooden doors. The master bedroom, in the former cheese chamber, is a step back in time, with wobbly walls, creaky, elm floorboards, a mahogany sleigh bed, throne chair and en-suite with roll-top bath. The other bedrooms are sunnier, with better views of the countryside. Most have en-suite bathrooms, but not all have showers. The décor is a little dated. Water is from the farm’s own spring.

Facilities: 9/10

With five bedrooms, a large lounge, indoor playroom and huge kitchen seating 11, this farmhouse easily sleeps three generations. Outside, in immaculately tended gardens, there’s a children’s play area with a mini castle, sandpit, giant draughts, swing ball, stream, wendy house, tree stump walkway, and a play barn with ping pong, table football, piano, pool and karaoke machine. A highlight for adventurous families is an hour-long tour of the farm, bouncing along in the back of a muddy pick-up truck, up hill and down dale, while the farm’s lovable spaniel, Maud, races gleefully alongside. Calf-feeding, cow-milking and egg collecting are all part of the fun. In the farm’s grounds, there’s a stream with minnow fishing (nets provided), bird watching, dam building, and an apple orchard, which guests are welcome to pick fruit from.
