Dear Graham

My brother is in his 60s: boring, selfish and living abroad. He is rarely in touch with any of our extended family but occasionally will visit us with his latest girlfriend to see our elderly mother.

His grown-up children have never received any emotional, cheap jordans online, financial or practical support and on his visits want nothing to do with him. However, he harbours a grudge, and in text messages to me he expresses resentment that he isn't more involved when we have family get-togethers which I or the children have organised.

I feel I should tell him that he is reaping what he's sown over the years, and urge him to behave more like an adult - he could start by expressing an interest in his kids and their children.

However, I'm not sure this is the right approach. Should I just ignore his texts?

Dear Chris

Texts? Your brother is 60, not 15. Surely if this man was seriously interested in playing a fuller part in the life of his extended family he might pick up the phone, or go mad and send an email?

Having established that your sibling is not the most emotionally literate or articulate creature on earth, I still think you do owe him some sort of response. He sees what you have and doesn't understand why his life looks so different. Without being melodramatic, I feel you could explain it to him, but maybe use the longer form of an email or letter rather than a terse text.

Start with an apology - people like that. Say you are sorry he feels excluded, but you had no idea that he wanted to be embraced by the family. Then mention his relationship with his children and explain that while you would be happy to see him at family gatherings, he might want to check on how his own offspring feel about him attending.

If he is still in the dark about his lack of invitations then I fear neither you, nor anybody else, can help him. Of course, the reality is that he probably only texts to complain when he is feeling a little lonely or bored and if you do try to include him more, the chances of him actually showing up are slim to non-existent.

Blood may be thicker than water, but sometimes it is just thick.
