What are the causes of pay gaps in some of the EU Member States?

The EU Survey 2002("The Gender pay gap. Origins and policy responses, European Commission, 2006”), which aimed at decomposing the pay gaps into causal factors, showed that the difference between men's and women's wages changed from country to country and the personal as well as working conditions' characteristics contributed to this difference.

In Ireland and Denmark, for instance, more than 50% of the pay gap, while in Austria and Great Britain one-third of the pay gap could be attributed to the differences between men's and women's personal and working characteristics.
