Web design refers to the design of websites that are displayed on the internet. It usually refers to the user experience aspects of website development rather than software development. Web designers plan, create and code internet sites and web pages, many of which combine text with sounds, pictures, graphics and video clips. A web designer is responsible for creating the design and layout of a website or web pages. It and can mean working on a brand new website or updating an already existing site.

Web development and web design aren't inherently more or less challenging—your strengths and weaknesses will dictate which is the path of least resistance for you. Many web agencies will charge a fixed cost for your site. This is based on past experience and an idea of the number of hours it will take to build based on your requirements. Most web professionals, from Graphic Designers to Web Developers, will charge within the $50-$250 per hour range.

This is what many coders aspire to become but it is not an easy thing to achieve. There is so much to learn, so many technologies, the syntax of the various languages are somewhat similar but different enough to cause some issues if you’re not fully versed in each language.

It’s like someone who speaks more than 3 languages. Sometimes having a coherent thought in one language and jumping to another is difficult.

That being said it can be done and there are many Full Stack Web Developers out there.

From your question, it sounds like you are interested in being a Full Stack Web Developer which is someone who works with both the front end and the back end.

Web Development is typically considered the backend of the website and maybe some JavaScript for the front end.

A web developer is typically someone who focuses on creating the functionality of the website. Dealing with things like validating & sanitizing user input of a form, having the website work with a database like MySQL which is important for websites that sell stuff or blogs.

Web Design is typically considered the Front End of a Website. How the website looks and feels. The User Experience or Interface.

A web designer is typically someone who is creative and has an eye for design. Kind of like an artist who codes.

The type of code that a web designer works with, will often primarily be

HTML
CSS
possibly JavaScript

Learning to create a website from scratch is doable but no easy task. If you are not looking to use any existing frameworks, libraries, Open Source CMS’s like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla, then you will have your work cut out for you.
