Hoses are typically made with rubber or vinyl, or a combination of the two. Vinyl hoses are lightweight and less costly, and work well for light duty watering. A rubber hose is heavier and harder to handle than a vinyl one, but it makes up for it with long-lasting durability in harsh climates. Rubber hoses also have the ability to handle hot water.

Some hoses are made with a combination of rubber and vinyl. These combination hoses are less expensive than pure rubber, but still maintain great flexibility and durability. You’ll also want to know the layers, or plies, of the hose. The more plies, the stronger the hose. Household hoses typically range from 1- to 6-ply. Garden hoses can also have a mesh layer on the outside for extra protection. http://layflathoses.wordpress.com

Fitting
Fittings, or couplings, are made from plastic or brass. The hose fitting is what connects the hose to the faucet. Plastic fittings are typically cheaper, while the more-expensive brass fittings last longer and perform better.

Size
A typical garden hose will have a diameter of 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch. The larger the diameter, the more water your hose will deliver. You’ll also need to consider length. Hoses can range from 10 feet up 100 feet or more. Choosing the right length really comes down to the distance between the water faucet and the area you’ll be watering. You don’t need 100 feet of hose if your garden is only 20 feet away. You can also connect smaller hoses if you need to only occasionally water at long distances.

Types
Besides your common garden hose, there are also soaker and sprinkler hoses. A soaker hose is full of tiny holes that are used for watering gardens and flowerbeds. A sprinkler hose has perforations that mist water. They’re great for watering your lawn and garden.

At Blains’ Farm & Fleet, we understand that a lush garden and lawn are your pride and joy. That’s why we carry everything you need to keep them looking their best. For more tips on garden tools and caring for your outdoor space, visit our Lawn Care and Gardening blogs.
