Loved the video (as well as others by Jason). I also agree with Vlad and Poof-Daddy that there's a lot more than the trick itself in strong magic. Through and Through is indeed very strong; but I think there are touches that make it really special like the sound effects and the great patter. To be fair, the post asks what is the strongest trick "you" do; so it's not really asking for the strongest trick. My strongest reaction I ever got was simply a stand-up Red Hot Mama where I had no place to put the red card except on the ground. There was a crowd; and it got a big collective shock. I must have done it a couple hundred times before; but this time was different! I love the 'transp' type tricks BTW; and have gotten pretty good reactions from Your Signed Card, the Visitor, etc ... but the strongest reaction ever for me was Red Hot Mama ... go figure!!! ps welcome welcome welcome Jason to the Café! Lynn.

That's a strong vid, jason ladanye.

To answer your question, Ed Marlo's Female. In fact, I've temporarily stopped performing it, because it's powerful in a way that I don't yet know how to control. One time when I did it, people got uncomfortable, because it was almost creepy, I knew too much. Sort of like if I started saying people's 4-digit PINs out loud, that kind of vibe. Yeah, it's impressively impossible, but it crosses a boundary. Anyway, I've talked to people about this in real life, but still don't have a solid handle on the routine. More work to do!

I get the biggest reactions from signed card to impossible location, (wallet or box) or my own closer....which is the revelation of a thought of card from a spectator shuffled deck, and I touch nothing.

Hi Jason,

First off, your card work is impeccable; I am sure Darwin Ortiz is proud of you.

But your question is not so easily answered and I know I have taken flack for this before and will again. Thank Heaven my wardrobe is largely fireproof.

I DO think that there are certainly strong card effects but the degree of their strength largely depends upon the performer. Presentation really is key and you obviously know that. But I have seen some magicians perform profoundly powerful tricks and audiences are less than impressed because there is no presentation. Conversely, I have seen magicians perform what some would call "weak" tricks and completely slay audiences.

I would offer that Pop Haydn's Chicago Surprise could well be a study both in terms of a strong effect that is made stronger by Pop's deep understanding of presentation. Harry Lorayne is another obvious example. John Guastaferro's One Degree actually seeks to focus on your very question. The premise of the book is concerned with how to elevate our magic that extra degree to make it much more memorable and obviously strong. So, your question asks a deeper question that could be discussed, namely, is a trick in and of itself strong even without a decent presentation? What is the impact of the performer? Karl Fulves' quite simple Gemini Twins is a VERY strong effect, but, with no presentation, it's a puzzle. Performed in a manner that builds to the denouement - good theater - makes it almost a miracle.

I have honked off a few magicians when I say this, but, magic is first and foremost a performing art and some magicians are so obsessed with "moves" that presentation is frequently an afterthought at best and I find that quite sad.

Find the strongest effects possible, and give them the best presentation possible. I agree with vlad that presentation is vital, and can transform a 'weak' effect. Though a strong effect is always better, of course.

I agree with Vlad, I have seen people go nuts over Red Hot Mama and I have seen people have that "OK...next trick..." kind of reaction. One year I was working a bar on New Years Eve and the Magician from the main room had to leave as soon as his 2 hrs was up (but he didn't hit every table) I stepped in and handled the Main Room for the rest of the night. He must have done Crazy Mans Handcuffs for every table he worked because when I hit a table he had been at, they would ask if I could do "that trick with the rubber bands passing through each other. I would say "Sure" and do a variation that uses 1 rubber band but it looks like 2 set up the same way then I would "melt them together openly - to melt into 1 rubber band" (not sure the name of the effect) anyway...THEY WENT NUTS... as simple a followup to an effect like CMH, the right timing and presentation made it look like a miracle.

Different people react differently. I don't know what part plays a bigger role to answer your question. The Spectator (and how they view "magic")... You, as a performer (how you present the effect)... The effect (how "magically" does it play out.)

Hi Jason,
Great video, liked this one from your book, have not had the book long enough to practice the routine but I'll def give it a try. Just going through Ortiz at the card table currently as I wanted to sharpen my pinky count prior to diving into your book but got caught up in the Ortiz material again..
For me I seem to always get a big reaction from triumph, almost straight from stars of magic. I have gotten some big reactions from Aces to Order as well.

But the biggest reaction I got was guy hollingworths reformation.
I'll let you know once I try out the material from your book.

Regards,

Alright, I'll have to read through that one again when I get home. Haven't bad a chance to practice any material from his latest book. I think I have a lot of material to practice between that and your book, should be good for a few months still.

I was wondering, what do you people think are some of the most powerful packet tricks that you end up with a clean ending because I want to do Free card tricks for people and have them look at the cards and not always having to put them right away. any help here would be greatly appreciated.

This is a card control that I am pretty proud of. It has been published two places: in Magic Magazine in Joshua Jay’s excellent Talk about tricks column, and in the TheSecondDeal.com’s card collection book. Learn card tricks

The control utilizes a technic that I consider to be one of the most versatile in all of the card magic – maybe just behind a good old double lift. Side Steal

I used to call the not-yet-named-control, but I really think it deserves a slightly more… clever name. I use the ambitious card control for the first phase of my ambitious card routine, but it is great for any circumstance where you have to convince the audience that the card is buried deep within the deck. Learn card magic sleights

Hope you enjoy it. If you people would like an explanation please write a comment for the video on Youtube.
