Low porosity 4C hair can be challenging to keep moisturized because the tightly closed cuticles make it hard for moisture to penetrate. However, with the right routine, you can keep your hair hydrated and healthy:

Use Warm Water for Washing: Warm water helps open the cuticles slightly, allowing moisture to penetrate better. don't use hot water, as it can dry out your hair.

Clarify Regularly: Low porosity hair tends to accumulate product buildup, which can block moisture. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove buildup and allow moisture to penetrate.
Deep Conditioning: Deep condition your hair weekly with a heat cap or under a steamer. The heat helps open the cuticles, allowing the conditioner to penetrate deeply. Look for deep conditioners with humectants like glycerin or honey, which attract moisture.

Use Lightweight Oils: Lightweight oils like argan oil, grapeseed oil, or sweet almond oil are better for low porosity hair. Heavier oils can sit on top of your hair, making it greasy without actually moisturizing. Apply oil after moisturizing to seal in the moisture.

Moisturize with the LCO Method: The LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil) method works well for low porosity 4c curly hair:

Baggy Method for Extra Hydration: After moisturizing, wrap your hair with a plastic cap or bag for 30 minutes to an hour. This creates a warm, humid environment that helps the moisture penetrate deeply into your strands.

Avoid Heavy Products: Heavy creams and butters can weigh down your hair and lead to buildup. Stick to lightweight, water-based products that can penetrate your hair shaft.

Protective Styling: Protective styles like braids, twists, or wigs can help retain moisture and reduce manipulation, which is essential for low porosity 4C hair. Just ensure your hair is well-moisturized before installing any protective style.

Preparing for Dreadlocks

When your hair has grown to a length you’re comfortable with, you can start your dreadlock journey. Here are a few tips to prepare:

Start with Healthy Hair: Ensure your hair is strong and healthy before starting dreads. Weak or damaged hair may not hold the dreads well.

Research Different Methods: There are various methods to start dreads, such as the two-strand twist method, comb coils, or the crochet method. Choose a method that works best for your hair type and lifestyle.

Consult a Professional: If possible, consult a loctician who can guide you through the process and help you start your dreadlocks in a way that suits your hair type.

Patience is Key: Dreadlocks require time and patience, especially in the beginning stages. Consistency in your hair care routine will yield the best results.

By following these tips, you can keep your low porosity 4C hair moisturized and promote healthy growth as you prepare for dreadlocks.
