I decided to have a quick look at the parking sensor problem on my Saab 9-5. I'd be happy enough to leave it alone except it tells me EVERY TIME I start the car which is getting a bit annoying. It's also a big bus so if the wife drives it I know she'd like to have them working. I've done a little bit of research on Saab forums and it'll generally be one of the sensors has failed. Sometimes a good clean will sort them, but no luck on that front. My main problem is they all tell you to get it plugged in to a tech2 system to figure out which sensor has failed. I'm wondering if there is another way to test them? I'll stick up a few pictures and if anyone has any ideas on how to test the sensor and/or the wiring, that'd be great! The sensors can be got for about €30 so I'd prefer to avoid replacing any more than I have to.

So the Saab has some ultrasonic sensors mounted in the bumper and a control module under the carpet in the boot. The sensor wires run from the controller to the sensors via a connector block under the n/s rear bumper. The rear connector block on the Park Assist controller goes to the sensors, the front to the dash controller.

In the where case there is no "ticking" from any sensor, disconnect the the connector block under the n/s rear bumper and check it for corrosion or dirt. Clean it with WD40. Check the sensors again for a "ticking" sound. Replace the sensor(s) that dont “tick” . |

That's great info, thanks. I had come across the "ticking test" alright. I had a quick listen earlier but my dog decided to try and "help" by getting in the way all the time I'll go and have another listen now with him out of the way.

So either all 4 are faulty or it's the connector block (most likely). I presume I have to drop the bumper to access it? If I do I'll have to wait probably until next weekend, I had an ankle operation recently and I'm pretty limited in what I can do. |

Interesting...it does make a series of beeps on startup, it hadn't occurred to me that it could be a diagnostic readout. I managed to get service history for the car which tells me that it is the 4th sensor (furthest right). I'm not totally convinced that is the only issue, I did the "tick" test above and I didn't hear anything from any of them so I'll get the bumper off at some stage and check the multiplug before I order a new sensor.
