In a Mexican city rendered a ghost town by violent drug gangs, young Estrella (Paola Lara) strikes up a prickly alliance with a group of orphaned boys – led by Shine (Juan Ramón López) – after her mother goes missing. Convinced the three chalk pieces she received from her teacher grant her magical wishes, Estrella tries to survive her harrowing new circumstances on the streets, which are further complicated by two adult thugs intent on reclaiming their stolen property from Shine. Pitched in fantastical Grimms terms (with a dash of Guillermo Del Toro), López’s allegorical feature doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of its scenario, often to heartrending effect.

Movie from a screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), the gifted director Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl; Can You Ever Forgive Me?) puts her focus on Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), a disgruntled journalist. How disgruntled? Lloyd actually balks when Esquire assigns him to interview the TV pied piper he dismisses as “a hokey kid-show guy.” Since Lloyd is loosely based on acclaimed writer Tom Junod, who won awards for his reporting on a rapist and an abortion doctor, you can understand his resistance to doing a deep dive into marshmallow.

Lloyd shows up bruised in Pittsburgh, where Mister Rogers lives and tapes his TV show, and instantly recognizes that this hardass journalist from the Big Apple needs some TLC. And that’s the movie the slow wearing down of a reporter’s cynicism through the inherent decency of, yes, a hokey kid-show guy. You can see the reconciliation coming between Lloyd and his dad from outer space. But what you can’t see, until you let this movie in, is how Hanks and Heller are purveyors of a delicate magic that is damn near irresistible. In the opening scene, Hanks steps onto the re-created, pasteboard set of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and begins the ritual. He takes off his street clothes and replaces them with the sneakers

Movie entrance and the song are a huge risk. It’s naive to think that because Hanks and Rogers are both nice guys, there’s no acting required. But Hanks, who captures the man’s precise diction and soothing intonation, quickly moves past imitation to find the nurturing soul that Mister Rogers opens to the world; not just to children, but to skeptics like Lloyd. And also, perhaps, to an audience of nonbelievers. Hanks succeeds triumphantly, gently interrogating Lloyd about his writing, his family, and the anger festering inside him. The scenes between Hanks and Rhys are a duet of withholding that find meaning in the space between words.

Although it’s safe to say that its biggest kicks come from its self-referential fan-service nods, its ability to embellish every portentous moment with character-specific humor, and its satisfyingly cohesive conclusion. It’s a superior piece of tentpole cinema, thanks in large part to A-game performances from stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo.Isn’t it theoretically possible for the Avengers to, at any given point, travel back in time and save Natasha or Tony or get the other Captain America or any other infinite possibilities? Are we to truly believe that anyone is really dead at any given time?

The idea of time travel completely shatters the entire narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ensuring there can never truly be consequences for any action. The Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War; then they didn’t. Why does Infinity War matter? Why does anything matter? (I understand there is a precedent for time travel and the multiverse in the comic book source material, but that was predominately used as a way to explain away the very muddled universe of Marvel Comics. That makes sense as an all-encompassing fix to thousands of comics, but for a comparatively succinct collection of movies, it strays from Marvel's obsessively tight narrative structure.)

Movie hard to feel anything at all when the light fades from Arc Reactor in his chest. Are we supposed to grieve for Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, when she has her own solo movie coming up? Yes, this is scheduled to be a prequel, but if it does well, wouldn’t Disney be inclined to bring her back? It doesn’t help that the movie is essentially split into two uneven halves. Part one is the Avengers grieving, coming to terms with their failure, and trying to devise a plan. This part also dedicates a shocking amount of time to Hawkeye for no other purpose than to set the grounds for the upcoming Hawkeye series starring Jeremy Renner. Does anyone care about Hawkeye? I certainly don't, and by the looks of his performance Renner doesn't either.
