BACK............................................... MARKOTABODOGE


My village - Markotabodoge - is situated in the North-West part of Transdanubia appr. 100 km far from Vienna and 30 km far from the county town Gyor. The village has its name since about 1848 when Markota and Bodoge were unificated. Bodoge(Bedegh) first was mentioned in the historical documents in 1116 in the time of King Stephen III. and Markota (Morgota) in 1222. In 1683 the Turkish troops nearly destroyed the village. In 1720 the number of the inhabitants was about 152 and showed growing tendency. In 1848 the people of the village took part in the WAR of Independence. In 1948 the first agricultural cooperative was founded by 10 members. After the revolution in 1956 120 people emigrated abroad. Nowadays about 500 people live in the village dealing with agriculture as the corpland is very rich here. The village has a nice church built in Baroque style in 1752, an old crucifix in cemetery from 1681, and Holy Trinity Sculpture from 1896.
