Re 4/4 II
History and pictures
The Re 4/4 II is a universal locomaotive, it can be used in front of
passenger and freight trains too.
It's axle weight is only 20 tons, so it can take
little bows good. That's why it received the letter R
on it's number plate. In 1964 three swiss engine producing companies
formed a consortium (SLM, BBC, MFO)
and in this year the first prototype stood on the rails. In 1967 it was
followed by 49 engines.
The second variant of the engine made in 1969 was half a meter longer,
and it received two pantograph
instead of one. Some locomotives of the type Re 4/4 II received a
paintwork for TEE trains.
In Switzerland you can often see an Re 4/4 and an Re6/6 tgether on the
mountain railroads
The local railroad employees describe them jocularly as Re 10/10.
