Taurus History

In
1997, the Austrian State Railways decided from which engine factory
would the new locomotives come from. From Adtranz, Alsthom and Siemens,
the winner was Siemens who won the tender to design a new
electric locomotive. Siemens and Krauss-Maffei delivered the
ingredients, and the engines were made in the machine shops of the ÖBB.
The production was divided in three parts; in 1997 50 one-system (1016)
and 25 two-system (1116) engines were ordered by the ÖBB. In 1999
another 100 two-system Taurus were ordered by ÖBB. In July of
2000 the Austrian State Railways ordered 225 machines, so there
are now about 400 machines of the Taurus on the Rails.
