Is there a way to protect stuff in my room against rats/mice

So, I am currently renting a 2 bedroom house with an unkempt housemate; yes, they are probably the reason we have a rat and mouse problem right now.
My biggest concern is that I will be out of the apartment for the holidays and will probably be gone for at least a month, and I am very worried about my belongings. I keep my room clean, but the bedrooms are made of drywall and wood and have lots of built-in closets; the house is also pretty old. The clothes I leave behind, I put in a plastic storage box, and I also send my book collection to a friend's house for storage. Is there any chance of mice/rats chewing on the plastic boxes in my room when I'm gone, given that it will be an abandoned room?
