The innovations introduced by the original Freak are all part of this package, combined with equally disruptive new features. The basic concept dates back to 2001 and is still compelling. The performance of this new Freak S is due to silicon: Ulysse Nardin pioneered this technology and led others. When the Freak debuted in 2001, it was the first wristwatch to feature a silicon escapement. The construction of the Dual Direct escapement even does away with levers and escape wheels, their services are no longer required, as the energy is transferred directly to the balance wheel via two silicon drive wheels.
