Regal Orbs in Path of Exile 2 upgrade a great 2-mod magic item into a rare, keeping its stats and adding one new affix—perfect for careful crafting, not random leveling spam.

Regal Orbs get treated like just another shiny button, and that's how people burn them for nothing. In Path of Exile 2, it's more like a quiet upgrade lever: take a strong magic item and turn it into a rare without wrecking what made it good in the first place. If you're short on time or you're playing trade, a lot of folks top up crafting supplies through EZNPC so they can actually test ideas instead of waiting on lucky drops, but the orb still deserves a plan.

What the Orb Really Does

Mechanically it's simple. You've got a blue item with two mods you actually want, and a Regal turns it yellow and adds one more mod. That extra roll is random, prefix or suffix, no promises. The point is control: you keep the two good lines you started with. That's why Regals feel scarce early on. During the campaign you're usually better off saving them, because a "pretty decent" magic item doesn't stay pretty decent for long once your resists get stressed and monster damage spikes.

When It's Worth Clicking

The trap is using a Regal to "see what happens." Don't. Use it when the base is already doing work for you. Think a weapon with high-tier flat damage plus attack speed, or jewellery that's nailed life and a key resistance. If the blue item wouldn't make you pause and go "okay, this is real," it's not Regal material. A rule I've heard from long-time crafters still holds up: if you wouldn't be happy investing more currency into that item later, you shouldn't invest a Regal into it now.

A Practical Crafting Loop

If you want a repeatable flow, start with a good white base and the right item level for the mod pool you're chasing. Transmute it, then Augment for the second mod. If you hit two great lines, Regal it. Then you read the third mod and make a decision fast. If it's strong, you've got a real foundation to build on with later crafting steps. If it's junk, don't get stubborn. Wear it as a stopgap, sell it, or bin it and run the loop again—because chasing a bad Regal result can drain you quicker than bad map RNG.

Keeping Regals Valuable in Endgame

Once you're mapping, your Regal income feels less mysterious: shards show up from vendor trash, and real drops start happening when you're farming efficiently. Still, treat Regals like an investment for high-impact slots—weapons, rings, amulets—where one clean rare can carry your build. If you're trying to keep momentum while you push harder content, it helps to understand the broader market for POE 2 Currency and price your crafts realistically, so you're not hoarding or wasting orbs out of habit.
