How Does WoW ElvUI Compare With the Default Interface?

I've been using the standard World of Warcraft UI for quite a while and I'm considering trying WoW ElvUI.

The default interface is fairly straightforward, so I'm wondering whether switching to ElvUI actually makes everyday gameplay more convenient.

I'm especially interested in the practical differences. Does it make health and resource information easier to monitor? Are action bars and nameplates easier to organize? Does it help during group content?

I'm also concerned about spending too much time configuring the interface instead of actually playing the game.

For players who have made the switch, how long did it take before your ElvUI setup felt comfortable?

Would you recommend starting with a basic configuration rather than copying a highly customized setup from another player?
