The Germans did their decision about the operation Barbarossa
in February 1941, but the fights for the Balkan and the snowmelt delayed it.
This timeloss made a great disadvantage in under Moscow. The operation started
on 22. June. Stalin and the Soviet high command had warned but they did not do
the required movements in time, and the suitable defence failed. The Wehrmacht
and the German air force (Luftwaffe) attacked the airports and destroyed the
planes on the ground in order to kick out the Soviet Air Force. The motorised
troops cut the Soviet supply lines and huge areas had encircled. More than 1
million (!) Soviet soldier became a POW. (Many of these POWs joined to the ROA-
Russian Liberator Army). The Germans attacked in three main ways, in each way
attacked an each army; the North Army, the Middle Army and the South Army. The
Finnish Army joined in North, the Romanians and the Hungarian 2nd Army in South
to the fight. Many other nations joined too, like Estonians, Latvians and
Italians as well. But only one of the attack ways was successful because the
Germans and the Finnish couldn't capture Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) during a
900 days long siege. The Wehrmacht had to fall back under Moscow in order to
keep off the more heavier loses which isn't caused only by the Red Army, but the
Russian winter, too. The South Army was successful in the beginning and they
captured Kiev, than they sent to Stalingrad in order to cut the trade lines of
the river Volga and to capture important industrial buildings. But the main goal
was the oil fields in the Caucasus, but they couldn't reach it. After the
Germans captured 90 (!) percent of the city the Russians with fresh energy,
secured supply lines and with modern tanks encircled the city and destroyed the
German 6th army. During the siege more than 1 million (!) soldiers
lost their lives. The Germans had repelled back to Harkov, but the Soviet troops
were too fast and their supply lines weren't secured. The Germans started a
great counteroffensive and they recaptured Harkov with modern equipments (Tiger
and Panther tanks and Elephant tankdestroyers). They reached the Kursk spur and
there was the biggest tankbattle of the world war. The Germans lost the battle
because they didn't have enough benzene and the high command gave dilettante
orders. After the battle the Germans had no chance whatever in the eastern
front. The Germans didn’t do anything after Kursk what could change the result
of the war. The Soviet high command divided the main attack way into three
main ways; the first went through Belarus and Poland to Berlin. The second
through Ukraine and Hungary to Austria, and the 3rd way went South
to capture Romania and the Balkan. The second attack way stocked in Hungary
because the Soviets had to fight with the Hungarian-German forces large battles
near Debrecen (there was the 2nd largest tankbattle) and Budapest.
So the "3rd ways army" had to help in Hungary, because Malinovskij
couldn't win alone. During this time Poland had liberated and the Soviets closed
to Berlin. Budapest fell after a 108 days long siege in 13.02.45. Vienna was
under a direct threat from the end of February and Berlin became a frontcity
from April. The end date of the world war (European war) can be determinated to
08. May, because Hitler died in the end of April and Germany was in ruins.
