The re-offender rate for this category of prisoner is usually 80%. After 12 months of the programme, those figures have dropped dramatically.
“The prison authorities spoke about how excited everyone was to train and people behaved so well so that they could come and do their rugby training in the evening,” said Robshaw.
“The scheme is having a massive influence in reforming people. It was an experience in itself to go to a maximum security prison but to do some good as well.
“Our boys were getting kisses off the guys at the end. Handshakes and hugs. They were so warm and welcoming to us. We all assumed that we would be stood on the side, just watching. But we were in there, playing touch, doing drills.
“Of course, we couldn’t understand each other, but their appreciation for us coming in was massive.”
