Gents,
Some good news!
My good friend & mentor John Maddaford who made 14 MOVO D10 replicas and who has been very poorly, is now getting towards full fitness.
I spoke with him yesterday and he volunteered to make six OSAM GB 17 replicas, one for himself & five for sale.
John will not start work until early June and he estimates completion before the end of 2011. The five engines are offered on a "first come first served" basis and are priced at Ł295.00 each plus postage & packing.
No money is required "up front", as previously, simply make a commitment to buy in the form of an Email or telephone call to me.
I will compile a list in chronological order of reciept of intent and the list will be fullfilled in that order. It is highly inlikely that John will make any more so if you are interested, let me know SOON!
Attached is a flyer for the casting & drawing set for your information.
With best wishes to all, Dick Roberts.
OSAM GB 17BCasting & Drawing Set.
Introduction:
The drawings & castings provide a close reproduction of Mr Garofali’s original engine, dating from 1948. Screw threads shown in the various drawings are those used on the original engine, taps & dies for some of which are not readily available today. There are some minor changes from the original, necessary because the castings are sand moulded rather than die cast. Most noticeable is the ribbing around the crank shaft housing. These are four in number, equally spaced around the case rather than the original six with uneven spacing. The other difference is that the carburettor body is separate from the rear housing, something that is almost unnoticeable when the engine is completed.
History:
The OSAM Company was founded in 1937 or 8. The Company name OSAM is an acronym, which translates approximately to: “Aircraft & Engines Experimental Workshop”. Mr Juares Garofali was the engine designer for them so, not unnaturally, all engine types carried the prefix “G”. The company continued after WWII and in 1946 Mr Leonardo Boreani joined the Company. From that time, until 1949, when they parted company, OSAM engines carried the prefix “GB” for “Garofali & Boreani”. The GB 17 is thus the 17th design, being released into the market shortly after the GB 18 for some reason, during 1948. It is a diesel engine of 10cc capacity and is believed to be unique in having a ringed aluminium piston. In 1949, Boreani & Garofali split up, Mr Garofali forming Micromeccanica Saturno using the trade name Super Tigre whilst Mr Boreani continued to use the OSAM title. My thanks to Salvi Angeloni for this historic information.
Configurations:
The basic design is for an engine that is a close approximation of the original, including the ringed aluminium piston. This is both unusual and difficult for a diesel engine due to the need for a very good compression seal. An option is detailed utilising a lapped iron piston with revised connecting rod and crankshaft for improved balance.
Casting & Drawing Set Contents:
The Drawing Package provides a General Arrangement Drawing and all detail drawings, enabling the builder to make either the original ringed piston version or the easier to make lapped piston alternative and a page of Construction Notes to assist the builder.
The Casting Set consists of three items, the crankcase, a rear cover and a carburettor body.
The Casting Set. Ninetto’s GB 17B.
Price is £55.00 for a casting & drawing set, an extra casting set is £40.00, all plus postage & packing at cost.
