Richard sent me this photo of the Thermic 100 hanging in the AMA museum. Richard says "This (I believe) is the same airframe as the one you posted a scan of and I referenced as appearing in Model Glider Design. There is no question that Frank built and you can his technique was impeccable!" It appears to be dried out an brittle, as I doubtless will be!

FRANK ZAIC MODELER !

The flying wing thing is the famous JASCO flying wing. Frank proudly advertised that one had flown out of sight in China. The model was trimmed to fly in circles which made it very difficult to tow. The plans included instructions of building a golf stick liket device which functioned as a vertical stabilizer. It had a trim tab which was used to counteract the models circling.
The towline was attached to this contraption which was supposed to separate from the tow hook at gliding altitude. Sometimes it did!

RC Model Planes: History
To Air is Human
The year was 1903. The place, Kitty Hawk, a beach off the coast of North Carolina. Orville and Wilbur Wright had just succeeded in getting the first airplane off the ground. Sure their "flight" only lasted a few seconds, but it was a giant leap for mankind, who had never before left terra firma in anything other than a blimp or hot air balloon.

A couple of decades later, the first model planes emerged. Basic in their design, they were built from spruce, pine, basswood, balsa, fragile glue, and a tissue paper like substance called silk span. Most modellers used tacks to keep the wood in place, which made the crafts quite heavy.

To RC is Divine
Many of the early pioneers of RC model planes were involved in amateur radio. Two of these trailblazers were Ross Hull and Clinton DeSoto. The pair would eventually go on to fly several RC gliders in the first public demonstration of controlled flights.

But it is Walter and Bill Good, who are credited with building the first RC model plane in 1937 for the Nationals RC event in Detroit. The twins christened their firstborn the "Guff". The Guff had an 8-foot wingspan and weighed 8.5 pounds. Its radio had only two frequencies, one for the rudder and the other for the elevator control. The Guff's servos were mounted directly on the tail surfaces and an outlet and long extension cord powered the transmitter. It is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

RC Model Planes: Getting Started
Attack of the Acronyms
Until recently, most RC model planes came in Kit form-a box full of parts, diagrams, and a manual. Unfortunately, assembling one could take weeks or even months. Nowadays, RC model planes are available in several additional flavors:

ARF- "Almost Ready-to-Fly." These models can be made flight-ready with as little as 16-20 hours of assembly. Major structures such as the wing halves, fuselage, and tail fins all come entirely built and covered. You simply assemble those sections, install a few miscellaneous pieces of hardware and you're done.

RTC- "Ready-to-Cover." Like ARFs, these models come largely preassembled. However, their wooden surfaces are left exposed. You must apply your own choice of film covering. The upside of this is that your finished model will have a unique look-you create its colors and trim scheme. The downside is the extra time required to do so.

RTF- "Ready-to-Fly." These models can be airborne 20 minutes after you open the box. You'll still have a few final parts to assemble, but far less than even ARFs require. The catch is that they are generally heavier and harder to repair.

Choosing the flavor that suits you best is a matter of taste. Some suggest acronym models for beginners because they don't require as much skill to assemble, and if you crash them, you won't feel as bad because you have less emotional investment. Others insist kits are the way to go because neophytes can gain valuable building experience and learn to do repairs themselves.
