About us:

I founded the Shop of Special Items (STB) in 1981 together with my husband, György Várnai, who was a design student of the College of Applied Arts at the time. It was his idea to open a shop with such a unique character, and he designed the interior as well.

The shop also fulfilled the dream of generations of handcraft artists: the place we created allowed young artists and art students from different fields to present and market their products to a broad audience. The shop was a success from the very opening, as it was among the first to sell contemporary handcrafted art items in Budapest. It attracted literally crowds of people waiting in line around the block to get in. Between 1989 and 1997 we also had another shop called STB in pedestrian-only Váci St.

Why STB?

Hand made, aesthetically pleasing goods may be purchased in the Shop of Special Items ever since, handicrafts reflecting the distinctive style and character of their artist, as opposed to mass-produced gadgets.

I manage the shop since its foundation. During the 27 years thence, its uniqueness and atmosphere has not changed a bit – perhaps because of the special interior and the mood of the objects on the shelves. Come in, see it for yourself.
