The history of the set
The Staunton chess set is the standard set of chess pieces used in the official chess tournaments.
It has been used since 29 September 1849, before it there was no standard set of chess pieces.
The set was patented by Cook on 1 March 1849.
The first 500 sets made were signed and numbered by Staunton.

Howard Staunton
1810 - London, 22 June 1874
He was an English chess master who was generally regarded as the world’s strongest chess player from 1843 to 1851. He was also known as a chess writer and a Shakespearean scholar.
He organized the world’s first international chess tournament in 1851 in London. From 1851 he turned towards chess writing and Shakespeare research.
