The history of the Park
The foundation-stone of the Hungarian Railway Museum was laid on 22 November 1999. The project was completed in less than eight months, funded by the Ministry of Transport and Waterways, MÁV and MÁV Nosztalgia Ltd. After many months of effort ** through which only a part of the area was renovated successfully ** Europe's first interactive railway park opened on 14 July 2000. The Park displays over a hundred railway vehicles and equipment on a site of over 70,000 m2, formerly belonging to the Budapest North Heating House Vehicle Depot.
The operational vintage fleet is placed in the 34 bays of the ** unrivalled ** roundhouse built in 1911. This includes the oldest operational steam engine built in 1870 and the legendary Árpád railcar from the 1930s (it sped from Budapest to Vienna in 2 hours 57 minutes). The gem of the vintage fleet is the elegant teak dining car built in 1912, which sped after the engine of the legendary Orient Express, an express that has become a legend and a nostalgic memory by now.
More than 100 special railway curiosities are stationed here, among them fifty rare engines and railway vehicles: railcars, self-powered rail cars and hand-carts, inspection cars, steam cranes, snow ploughs and other curiosities, the most beautiful ones, the most valuable ones brought together. The exhibits take visitors through the entire history of the railways from the steam engines of the 1870s to the powerful electric engines of today. Many of the vehicles are still in working order and used on the nostalgic train trips organised by MÁV Nosztalgia Ltd. in Hungary and abroad.
In the open air railway museum that belongs to Europe's largest such museums, visitors can not only admire the old machines: they can also try them out. They can drive a steam engine, travel in a railcar, operate a hand-cart, ride on the turntable and on the horse tram. The engine simulator offers a virtual experience of driving an electric railway engine, while the rail-cycle challenges one's sense of balance. There is also a model railway that visitors can operate in the maroon postal wagon.
The beautifully landscaped park is ideal for relaxation, and after the playful programs refreshments are available in the Buffet or on the terrace of the Nostalgia Café. The hungry stomachs are attracted by tasteful snacks and the mild prices of the Füsti Dining Car.
Those who would like to take the experiences and „ambience” of the museum home with them can choose from railway souvenirs in the Nostalgia Gift Shop.
