Forgotten Olympic medals
The names of the stars of Summer and Winter Olympic Games, Tamás Kásás, Dániel Gyurta or László Papp from the old times sound familiar to many of us. But who would nod recognisingly upon hearing the name of Miltiadész Manno, Éva Földes or Ferenc Mező? Only a few of us, although they are also medal-winning Hungarians. However, it is true that they gained their medals in a field known only to a few, artistic competitions.
Artistic competitions were dreamed up by the father of the Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, who emphasized the beauty and moral strength of sport from the first moment. He accentuated that the aim of participating in the Olympic games was to deepen the harmony between body and spirit. Driven by this thought, he proposed the organisation of artistic competitions on the congress of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1906. The best competitors were first awarded medals in 1912 in the fields of architecture, sculpture, music, literature and painting.
It is an interesting fact that Pierre de Coubertin won a gold medal in 1912 with his ode - submitted under a pseudonym.
