Garachico
Located at the way out of Teno Mountain. The town itself nestles below a 500m+ (1500ft) cliff. Garachico and the surrounding area is arguably the least spoilt coastal area of Tenerife, and is in sharp contrast to areas such as Playa de las Americas. Still it is one of the most beautiful and lovely places of the island with 5,700 inhabitants. An eruption in 1706 was a major event in the town’s history, prior to that, Garachico was the most important harbour of Tenerife exporting Malmsey Wine and other local produce. It became a tranquil sleeping-town. Shipping is quite dangeruous here because of the vulcanic reefs. There is no beach worth mentioning; the coastline is essentially volcanic debris, but this does give the town its charm and a reason to visit it. The town itself is low rise and a mixture of renovated and in need of renovation buildings, and includes several large courtyard style houses. There are many hidden shops that appear to be private houses until they open their doors and display their wares. Most streets are cobbled and narrow, with cars parked on one side. Next to the main church there is a big open square, with a bar under the bandstand. An old monastery is adjacent to the main square and open to the public. The municipal authorities have clearly tried to show off their history and many buildings have English, Spanish and German noticeboards, explaining their history. On the front, an old water-mill houses a small museum, as does an old harbourside fort. There are many family run restaurants, with the best hidden away in the back streets.
(According to the legend, when Teide’s twinvolcano erupted, it was approaching the town but the inhabitants told the vicar to come and help. He brought a wooden-cross from the church and placed it before the lavaflowing, at the influence of that the lavaflowing split into two, the town escaped.)
Los Gigantes
“The Giants” – that is the name of the breath-taking, steep coastal sector of northern Tenerife. It falls down verticaly to the sea from 450 metres high. They are the highest cliffs in Europe. The town of Los Gigantes is named after, and lies at the foot of, the imposing cliffs. There is a small, clean, black sand beach which is rarely crowded, despite being suitable for children.
Masca
Masca is a small mountain village located in Buenaviste del Norte on a small mountain road named Masca. The village is home to around 150 inhabitants. The village is in the Teno mountains, which range from 600 to 800 m and extend up to the northwesternmost point of Tenerife. It was the shelter of pirates long ago, could be approached only by mule. It became a pirate village since there was an excellent view over the ocean and the pirates could watch the ships they could attack. The Atlantic Ocean lies several kilometres northwest.
The housing designs are two-stories and are built on the mountain slopes and are very remarkable. Some of the homes are abandoned. Much of its inhabitants left for larger towns and cities on and on other islands and to Spain.
La Orotava
The town of La Orotava lies in the heart of a valley, and it is the most beautiful little town in Tenerife. Walking in the town you can find historical buildings, steep passages. It is famos for the splendid carved balconys made by dark wood and gardens. The town is located in the middle of a banana plantation.
Icod de los vinos
Icod has an area of 95.90 km², is situated at an altitude of 235 metres above sea level, and has a population of 24,179 as of 2006. Icod de los Vinos is located on a continuous smooth slope that stretches from the extensive forests of Canary Island Pine down to the sea, and has almost 10 km of shoreline. The city is surrounded by a very fertile valley, and its streets and corners offer impressive views of the volcanic mountain Teide, as well as dense pine forests which descend like hanging gardens from its summit to Icod's higher-altitude districts. Its banana plantations, orchards and vineyards give rise to a lively commerce.
The product for which the area has historically been best known: the local wine (vino in Spanish), which has recently regained its ancient prestige. The Spanish conquerors were quick to colonize this fertile and well-watered region, and introduced the cultivation of sugarcane and grapevines; the latter came to predominate.
The other spectacle of the town is the Dragon Tree, said to be thousand of years old, the oldest dragon tree of the world. In fact, no study seems to have confirmed such longevity for the tree, which is more likely to have an age in the hundreds of years. In any case, it is a tree that never goes unnoticed, and it has always been the symbol of Icod. There is no other tree that could surpass its sizes: diameter is 12 meters and 14 meters high. The tree can be found in the middle of a park called the Parque del Drago. According to the legend about the Dragon Tree, Herkules had to carried out 7 tasks, one of that was to cut all the heads of the Seven-head Dragon. The moment he cut them all, the dragon tree grew out of its blood. The venation of the leaves are red, and if someone tears down a leaf, it will be bleeding.
