Five months after ,

cresting Mount Katahdin in Maine in July, marking the end of the supported thru-hike that started in Georgia, Jurek told Runner’s World he isn’t exactly sure what the word “retirement&rdquo,

“Retirement is this really confusing word sometimes; it means stopping,” the 42-year-old champion ultrarunner said. “For me, the beauty of this sport is it’s a lifestyle. Right now I am trying to figure out what running means to me. What do I want to do to push my boundaries and explore the edge of physical and mental performance? And racing doesn’t feel like something I need to do. Phasing into a different part of my career is a better way to put it.”
Though he hasn’t participated in any races since breaking the AT record, Jurek made no promises he wouldn’t compete again. While he recovered from the punishing trip—“My body didn’t start feeling better deep down until three months after,” he said—Jurek kept a busy schedule,

That next phase of his career may involve less racing and more challenges like the AT thru-hike. He could attempt more records, but in the near future, Jurek said he wants to have fun. “I love to go running or hiking and not have that clock ticking in the background,” he said.
Jurek has not finished reflecting on his accomplishment this summer, though. The last of his trail equipment is still unpacked in his Boulder, Colorado, home.
“I am still digesting it,” he said. “Looking at the broader perspective, it’s just a whole different dimension. I put pins on a map, and looking at the total distance, I am still in awe.”
To help process the trip, Jurek recently met with the AT’s former supported thru-hike record holder,
Jennifer Pharr Davis. They commiserated on difficult sections of the trail and tried to parse their own feelings about the finish.
“We talked about the wild aftermath, the Baxter stuff,

citations and a $500 fine he received for consuming alcohol inside Baxter State Park at the end of the thru-hike to celebrate. “There are a lot of people with very strong opinions on how it should be done, but Jen and I talked about how you have to have your own experience,

Since that meeting, Jurek was nominated as one of National Geographic’s
Adventurers of the Year. He is also working on a proposal to write a book,

Jurek has been communicating with fellow ultrarunner Karl Meltzer, who is planning an AT record-attempt of his own next year. Jurek and his wife, Jenny, are going to crew Meltzer for a few weeks. “And I am not going to cut him any slack,

While Jurek doesn't know exactly what’s next, he does hope one item will happen: starting a family.
“Lots of things will change,
