General information
The english bulldog comes in a variety of colours and ideally has a smooth, short coat. The only disqualifier for the breed in the show ring is a liver colored nose, although black-coated bulldogs are not preferred. In the US, the size of a typical mature male is about 50 pounds; that for mature females is about 40 pounds. In the United Kingdom, the breed standard is 55 pounds for a male and 50 pounds for a female, but it is not uncommon for males to be 70 pounds.
In the 1600s, english bulldogs were used for bullbaiting (as well as bearbaiting), a gambling sport popular in the 17th century with wagers laid in which trained bulldogs leapt at a bull lashed to a post, latched onto its snout and attempted to suffocate it. Bulldogs were not needed after these sports were outlawed, and so the original athletic bulldog was crossed with pug. The outcome was a shorter, wider dog with a brachycephalic skull. Though today's bulldog looks tough, he cannot perform the job he was originally created for, as he cannot withstand the rigors of running and being thrown from a bull, and cannot grip with such a short muzzle.
The oldest single breed speciality club is The Bulldog Club (England), which was formed in 1875. Members of this club met frequently at the Blue Post pub on Oxford Street in London. There they wrote the first standard of perfection for the breed. In 1891 the two top bulldogs, Orry and Dockleaf, competed in a contest to see which dog could walk the farthest. Orry was reminiscent of the original bulldogs, lighter boned and very athletic. Dockleaf was smaller and heavier set, more like modern bulldogs. Dockleaf was declared the winner that year. Although some argued that the older version of the bulldog was more fit to perform, the modern version's looks won over the fans of the breed because they proved they were equally as fit and athletic in the walking competition.
While some canine breeds have their tails cut soon after birth, english bulldogs are one of very few breeds who's tail is naturally small and curled, and can appear as though they do not have one. The tail of some can be so tight to the body that regular cleaning and maintenance is recommended...

Az angol buldog (English bulldog) széles, erős, zömök felépítésű kutyafajta. Lábai meglehetősen rövidek. Mellkasa tágas, gömbölyded és igen mély, mélyen belóg a mellső lábak közé. A has felhúzott. Az alacsonyan tűzött farok a tövénél vaskos, majd hirtelen elhegyesedik. Oldalra áll, természetesen rövid. Az egyenes mellső lábak egymástól távol állnak, és valamivel rövidebbek a hátsóknál. A hátsó mancsok tömöttek és kör alakúak, a mellső mancsok pedig kerekek. A vaskos, mély és erős nyak az átlagosnál rövidebb. Masszív, négyszögletes koponyája igen nagy. A pofa lekerekített, és oldalt a szemen is túlnyúlik. A magas arcorri rész rövid és felfelé forduló. Az orr szinte pontosan a szemek közé esik, az orrlyukak nagyon tágak. A széles felső ajkak rálógnak az alsó állkapocsra, elöl viszont szépen rásimulnak, így a fogak nem láthatók. A vékony, kicsi rózsa fülek magasan tűzöttek és egymástól távol állók. A szemek egészen lent ülnek, kerekek és mérsékelten nagyok.
Az angol buldog (English bulldog) jó természetű, nagyon kiegyensúlyozott és szelíd kutya. Vidám és barátságos, spontán és lelkes viselkedésű, de a lakásban nyugodt, érzékenyen reagál környezetében uralkodó hangulatra. Értelmes fajta, amely átgondolja a dolgokat, ám ettől még igen engedelmes. Az angol buldog kimondottan gyengéd, szeret a család közelében lenni. A más kutyákkal és háziállatokkal váló együttélés problémamentes. Igen toleráns, jól fejlett humorérzéke van. Nem könnyű kihozni a sodrából. Általában mindenkivel összebarátkozik, bár előfordulnak óvatosabb egyedek is.
Az angol buldog (English bulldog) általában könnyen tanítható. Érzékenyen reagál a gazdája hangjára és hangulatára, s gyakran már egy barátságos, de határozott hangú kérés is elég ahhoz, hogy engedelmeskedjen. Semmiképpen sem szabad komolyabban bántalmazni, viszont azt sem lehet hagyni, hogy túl sokat engedjen meg magának. A nevelésében állandóan következetesnek és egyértelműnek kell lenni. Ez a kutya nagyon szeretne gazdája kedvében járni, és ha megérti, hogy mit akarnak tőle, akkor nem okoz csalódást. Az angol buldog népszerű társ a gyermekes és a gyermektelen családokban egyaránt.
