Mastering the Orb of Chance in Solo Self-Found (SSF) mode in Path of Exile 2 means shifting your strategy from pure economic optimization—possible in trade leagues—to personal and build-centric utility. Here’s how best to use your Orbs of Chance in SSF for 2025, what tactics genuinely work, and what common advice you should ignore.
First, remember that Orbs of Chance are one of the few reliable ways in SSF to obtain unique items that could define or significantly boost your builds. In the absence of trade, every poe 2 currency item and base matters far more than in other modes. This makes your choice of what to chance—and when—essential.
What sticks:
Target uniques you actually need. Since you can’t buy or sell, focus your chancing efforts on items that would immediately improve your current or future builds. Consult your build guides, or target broadly useful “utility” uniques that enable flexible options or power spikes for your character.
Whitelist relevant bases in your loot filter. Orbs of Chance and the bases you care about should always be highlighted, making it much easier to accumulate and target what’s needed. Most SSF veterans recommend always having a stash of Orbs of Chance and displaying only bases with powerful unique counterparts. This reduces clutter and prevents accidentally missing your chance on a prized item base.
Understand what can and cannot be chanced. Some uniques—especially those that drop exclusively from bosses or are tied to higher-tier content—cannot be obtained by chancing. Always double-check that the unique you’re targeting is available from Orbs of Chance and isn’t boss or league-exclusive.
Use scour-chancing for efficiency. If the base is hard to replace, use Orbs of Scouring to reset non-unique outcomes back to a normal item, letting you repeat without sourcing a new base. This is particularly effective for rare bases.
Prioritize items with multiple useful unique outcomes. Sometimes a base can result in two or more uniques, all of which are build-enabling or valuable. Choosing these increases your odds of getting something helpful each cycle.
What doesn’t stick:
Don’t hoard Orbs forever “just in case.” Some players in SSF collect large amounts, anxiously waiting for the “perfect” base. While saving for key targets is good, being too conservative means missing out on upgrades throughout your journey.
Don’t waste Orbs on bases with undesirable or useless uniques. Not every unique will benefit your build. Don’t fall for the gambler’s fallacy—research in advance instead of chancing everything you find.
Don’t chase ultra-rare Tier 0 uniques excessively. High-end chase items like Astramentis or Dream Fragments have an extremely low chance to drop from chancing. While it can be fun to try, these are better left as special projects rather than core progression goals. Stick to accessible, build-enabling items that offer reliable upgrades.
Don’t chance “advanced” or “expert” bases unless sure. Only specific normal bases can be chanced for uniques; advanced versions or certain higher-level bases may be excluded from chancing options, especially in the current game version.
The safest rule is to chase what’s useful for you. Always play with purpose: keep your filter sharp, your stash managed, and your eye on uniques that would genuinely advance your build or enable a new one. Patience and targeted strategy pay off much more than broad, random gambling in SSF remember, you can’t simply buy poe 2 currency when you run low, so every orb counts. |
